Usually the umbilical cord is clamped and cut before the placenta is delivered, so folks don't normally see the umbilical cord whole.

The standard suggestion for tying off the cord is a shoelace. Surely they had a shoelace.

I lay the bedspread/quilt/comforter over the bed neatly every day. The sheets underneath do not get smoothed, tucked, or otherwise neatened except when I'm putting on clean ones (usually weekly). I do not require the children to make their beds except when company is coming.
