Regardless of the unfortunate pause, he also didn't specify the race of the lacrosse players, which offensively suggests white is the default while anything else is 'other.'

Re: Phones & Cases And Such

It's pretty standard around here for kids to get phones in 6th grade (or younger, but almost never older). My kids don't get them until high school, woe betide them. My younger kids have older phones (no service) and devices that use wifi networks. They have wifi at the middle school, the library, a...

Re: Ridiculous Things You Read On Facebook

Life with teens is better. Their independence makes other aspects of life easier. Life with babies is harder. They are needy. They are constantly demanding. Cute, but unreasonable.

Parenting teens, however, sucks donkey balls.

Re: Books from your high school reading lists

We had suggested summer reading lists every year but they weren't required. I tried to read Bradbury's Dandelion Wine the summer before 9th grade and I couldn't even finish it. I was a voracious reader and that was the first book I can remember putting down and not picking back up. Just awful. I sho...

Michigan passed a law saying the public school districts couldn't start until after Labor Day. We take our Up North tourism dollars seriously around here apparently.

The kids get out mid-June.

Band practices start mid-August, however. Football season starts before classes do.

Totally unscientific poll of people I've known with kids suggests that girls tend to be put in school if they're close to the cutoff and boys tend to be held out for a year. Some parents use future athletic success as a reason to hold out the boys, since greater physical development could put them a...
