Re: NCAA Basketball 23-24
Great question. And I agree that increasing the size of the court - and possibly the lane - would help. It's kind of wild to think about the size of players today compared to when the court size was decided. Obviously, there are logistical issues with increasing the size of courts at some older gyms...

From the outside, it seems like a pretty smart hire. BYU finished with a better rating than Kentucky this year. Guess which team had better talent? And BYU plays that ultra-modern offense of a ton of threes and layups. I think they were #4 in the country in the % of their shots from the 3pt line. I...

Re: Movies
I couldn't love Alien or Aliens much more. They're both brilliant movies. But I haven't really liked a movie in the series since. Alien 3 was a huge disappointment. Prometheus was better, but still wasn't that good. It certainly didn't live up to the hype. I hope they get this one right. I'm curious...

I don't know my most quoted movie line ever, but that's in contention. I've seen the whole movie, but never in sequential order. There's one scene where they start a scene in the huddle on the face of a Vietnamese guy I grew up with who was in extra in the movie as an OL. I hope he didn't get typec...

It was a bit of a roster problem at Chelsea. The team was up and down during his time, with a number of different managers. But the one position they constantly had surplus in was wingers. It was hard for any player to get consistent minutes there. That said, I think Chelsea should have played him m...

I've been to the World's Largest Chest of Drawers many times. It's the facade of a huge furniture mall. NC in general and High Point in specific used to be the center of the US furniture manufacturing. I don't think that's really been true for decades now, but I think several furniture companies sti...

Went out on the beach to watch it. We got to about 75% here. It was a mostly cloudless sky, and honestly, if you didn't know it was an eclipse, you probably wouldn't have been able to tell without the special glasses. It was a bit darker than a full sun day, but not obviously so. We didn't prepare, ...

Re: NCAA Basketball 23-24
I suspect there’s something potentially disastrously scandalous coming down the pike. A top coach doesn’t just leave UK. If it’s money, I would think Cal has enough cachet to get them to match any offer. Cal does tend to leave one step ahead of the executioner (the NCAA), but in this case, I think ...

Yeah, that's pretty huge. I don't think Cal leaving is a huge surprise, even if it is big news. Going to a conference rival is a surprise though. The next domino will be interesting. I have to think that Hurley and Oats are at the top of UK's list. I don't think Danny's going anywhere, but I'm sure ...

The problem is that the replay they showed on TV didn't show the UConn girl's legs and was at an angle where it wasn't easy to see her movement. So it was easy for everyone to declare it a bad call. Especially because nobody wanted that possession to end on an offensive foul. But the live shot from ...

That's wild. I wonder if that happening on such a big stage led to so many coaches auto-sitting any player with 2 fouls in the first half. Some coaches will let a player get his 3rd, but leaving a star in with 3 fouls in the first half? That's criminal negligence.

Yes, but those teams generally have much more continuity from year to year. There's no rule that says you can't say on a soccer team for more than 4 years.

I don't know how closely the tournaments all work together, but if they set the NIT as an autobid for next year it would probably stop teams from backing out or not caring. I'm on my second go through of Beyonce's new album. I like it, but I think calling it a country album is reductive. There are some country influences throughout, but if nobody told you ahead of time you were going to listen to a country album, I doubt many would think of it that way. BTW, one thing ...

Yeah, that was an impressive shooting performance, particularly in the 3rd, by Clark. I agree that Reece’s 5th foul was a bad call, but it didn’t really matter at that point. LSU wasn’t coming back. Btw, I don’t agree that Reece is close behind Clark. I’m not even sure she’s the best player in her o...

I just love that the ad also features CJ McCollum who famously led Lehigh to a huge upset of Duke in the NCAA Tournament. I like to think K had no idea they were going to do that until he saw the commercial on TV the first time.

If they win it all, we have to talk about this being one of the most dominant stretches since UCLA right? They haven’t been challenged in 10 straight tourney games. Yeah, no question. At this point, the most recent comp might be that UNLV team that beat Duke by 30 in the finals and then steamrolled...

I remember seeing it in the theater opening weekend, and walking out thinking it was pretty good, but not a classic like Fargo. I think its on...

Toasted ravioli is quite good, but it's not really something to base a meal around. More of an appetizer. And there used to be quite a few good Italian restaurants on The Hill. And one or two very good high-end restaurants down near the river.
