I get tired of Layla halfway through the song, but if this thread was "Greatest fucking opening guitar riffs of all time", Layla is a solid top 5 contender.

Yeah, I generally stay out talking in music discussion threads. My basic belief with music has always been that the underlying goal for any musician isn't to tell their views or promote their art, but rather ultimately to get pussy (or cock). So to argue who's better at their pussy-getting ways seemed like a waste. Not saying anyone's wrong with being a music snob, it was just never something that really got me overly excited; different strokes for different folks.

Big fans of any band or musician never like that artist's most popular stuff. That doesn't mean that Layla still isn't Clapton's most anthemic song. I'm not even sure what his #2 would be. Maybe Cocaine or White Room.

yeah. But it should be clarified that I love Layla, too. There are probably about 30 songs with Clapton as the lead guitarist (Which is my definition of a Clapton song since he has iconic stuff with Cream and Derek & The Dominos -WMGGW is excepted as a Beatles song), that I like better than even "sweet Emotion" but that doesn't mean they all would be what I consider a great classic rock radio song. The layla cut without the extended piano is pretty excellent though as a radio single.

A big reason for that is a lot of my favorite Clapton cuts are off live discs where he has extended solos. Bell Bottom Blues off 24 nights being the prime example...the album cut is nothing compared to that live version, which I simply adore, darling.

Comfortably Numb is definitely one of the best. Obviously, this is all subjective, but Gilmour is my favorite rock guitarist ever. Speaking of guitarists, I'll cast my vote for best classic rock song ever for Voodoo Child (Slight Return).

Though I can't find it, or it's been lost to the Swamps of time, I've told the story of the long, cross country trip I took with my parents that is one of my earliest memories. To this day, both Baker Street and Miracles are songs that make me think of highways and a hot, vinyl backseat.*

I heard Miracles on the radio yesterday. In typical me fashion, I've never bothered (until this morning) to read up on the song despite the fact that it's randomly meaningful to me, so I didn't know there was a radio cut and an album cut of the song. The radio single version was edited not just for time, but for content. Specifically this, I guess:

I had a taste of the real world (Just a drop of it)
When I went down on you, girl, oh.

I noticed that line yesterday, and it stood out so much that I'm not entirely sure that I've ever actually heard the album cut. The lyrics as transcribed here read like a horrible love poem, and then there is this towards the end:

Yeah, this came out in 75, and they would play the album version regularly on radio. About that time I gave up on Starship.

Currently listening to the Derek & The Dominos album "The Complete Jams" I think any of these are better than Layla, and I bet George Harrison would agree. :)
