I looked it up, and I think I'd be okay at 55. (I had always assumed it was 59.5.)

The "Rule of 55" applies if a person retires after turning 55, the money is from the person's current 401k plan, and the employer's plan administrator approves the early withdrawals. But luckily for me, I am my employer's 401(k) plan administrator (one of them anyway).

I was gonna correct him before you did. Part of my retirement plan is to have basically just enough money to coast from age 50 to 59.5 until I can start tapping those accounts, then tapping Social Security at age 67. If all goes well, will mostly just be taking yearly returns (approx 4 percent of balance) to live on from retirement accounts
How does that go with being an ex-pat from here on out? Do you still get SSI assuming you maintain citizenship?
Yeah - my mother in law gets SS payments regularly. The exchange rate helps her a great deal.

So, this fatal wreck happened on my quiet residential street over the weekend. I was a witness to the events leading up to it (though not the crash itself), and it easily could have been me who the driver hit, instead of the ultimate victim.

The wreck happened on the east end of my block. A few seconds before that, I was on the west end of my block, heading west but about to turn left. It’s an offset four-way intersection. As I started in to the intersection to turn left, I heard a roar from my right and stopped short – some methhead-looking dirtbag in an old Jeep Cherokee came rushing around the corner from the offset facing street and swerved around me as he turned left to head east down my street. In my mirror I saw him swerving back and forth as he sped down my street.

A few seconds later, while I was still sitting there, a second car came screaming around the same corner and also sped down my street.
I then went on my merry way, and when I got back 20 minutes later there were fire trucks and ambulances and police cars at the east end of my block.

Apparently the dirbag Jeep driver had hit another car about a mile away and left the scene. I don't know if the second car was the one the dirtbag hit, or a "good Samaritan" - who went on a mile-long high-speed chase through residential streets at dusk.

If I hadn’t stopped short, the Jeep would’ve plowed into me. But because he was coming from my right, he probably wouldn’t have killed me.

(They haven’t reported the victim’s name yet, so I don't know if he was from the neighborhood. But there were wreaths and candles at the corner this morning.)
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

I'm pretty sure it was someone else he killed. He plowed straight into the driver's side of the other car.

Funny, one might think of the Pacific coast of Mexico as straight south of California. But of course it's slanting eastward all the way through.

1988's "Action Jackson" might be the most 1980's action movie... while not actually having an overabundance of action scenes.

Produced by Joel Silver (Commando, Predator, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Roadhouse...), it was a shot at letting Carl Weathers carry a movie.

Here are six of the first seven names in the cast: Carl Weathers, Craig T. Nelson, Vanity, Sharon Stone, Bill Duke, and Robert Davi.

It also includes Argyle from "Die Hard", Biff from the "Back to the Future" trilogy, the guy who was "dead tired" in "Commando", Endo from "Lethal Weapon"...

If the Swamp Movie Night ever comes back, I need to talk about the combination of Nelson's hair dye and eyebrows.

At least she did not come down wearing a Sportsfrog/The Swamp sweatshirt that she got from some guy friend. That could make it awkward here.

So...does anyone know how the short-range radio standard, Bluetooth, got both its name and its symbol?

King Harald Bluetooth Gormsson, ruled the Norse and Denmark and introduced Christianity to them. The Norse runes, for H and B superimposed upon one another (known in the Viking culture as a bind-rune), creates the logo we all recognize today.

Someone sent my wife socks with my face all over them as a Christmas gift.

And we have no idea who.

I feel like at some point someone told me they were going to do this, but maybe I'm just forcing a non memory. I'm sure we can contact the company and all who placed the order, but it's much more fun to think that there's a weirdo who wants to send her funny gifts like this.

I bought socks with my face on them for a friend. We thought that was funnier than socks with his face. But if customer service is any indication, you may not get a response if you got this from the same company (facesocks.com which ispupsocks.com).

Gotta go with the spicy V8. I go through phases of drinking it. Mostly, see it at BJs and think a case is a good idea. By the time I get through the case, I'm over it for another 3 years. I used to crave tomato juice on airplanes and think it's an odd choice for the drink cart, then I read somewhere that there is a biological reason people crave tomato juice while flying. Can't remember why.
