In the top division, the heaviest is 500 pounds. Lightest is around 260 (and at 5' 8" he's pretty much hopeless against the big guns.)

Anything under 320 is small.

This fight took place a couple of days ago - On the right is Tochinoshin (370 pounds - current leader from about the 6th seed) against 500 pound Ichinojo (7th seed).

So this clip will give a taste of what Sumo is all about.

Hakuho is most likely the greatest sumo ever.

Tochinoshin is a "rank and filer" who has improved over the years and is now one of the top 5 guys.

Hakuho's record against him is 25-0.

Each tournament lasts for 15 days - one bout per day.

Going into today's bout, Tochinoshin was 11-0, and Hakuho was at 10-1. (The other active Yokozuna is at 11-1 after today's matches). I've watched a dozen of these tournaments and this one is epic!

By the way - the envelopes the winner gets are each filled with about $700 bucks each. On top of their salaries...

How do they make their "salaries"? Do they have sponsorships and tv deals and whatnot?

Paid by their "stable" or team. Where they train. Once a Sumo gets to pro-level he will get a bas salary of around 10 grand a month and a bonus for each match he wins. Salaries go up as the fighter moves up through the ranks. So the two guys you saw fight there make around 40k a month, plus some promotional money plus money for each bout. Plus bonusses for winning tournaments or one of the prizes given out at the end of the tournament. Maybe topping out at a million-two million a year.

A very Japanese system, the fighters actually live in their stable until they reach a certain age.

I had a drink thrown on me once. I made fun of my cousin's friend who had a lisp. After a few hours of drinking she made a joke about me then I made an obvious lisp joke. Then she doused me. I just stormed out all heated. She apologized the next day. As did I. In the moment it's a bad feeling, but after you cool off and change your shirt you feel better.

And that reminds me. I almost threw a drink on a guy the other day. My gf, friends, and I met others at a bar. I wasn't drinking but all others were. This new drunk acquaintance we met just got cut off and was bitching to the waitress. Well, a few minutes later my gf, who was wearing a skirt, got it pulled up by him in front of everyone. I nearly lost it and after a few "what the fucks," I had to leave the setting immediately because it was obvious I was getting very mad. I had to stop myself from doing anything because, well, you guys know. I don't need anymore drama.

All that to say, I'm not down with drenching Tamigotchi. As nice as making her day bad would make one feel.

Shit that’s upsetting me, in order of really pissing me off to still purely theoretical but I’m steeling myself anyway:

1. Yesterday was the day every modern day parent looks forward to, the first day your kid comes home reporting social media fueled rumors of a threatened shooting at school. We did get a message from the principal yesterday afternoon, assuring us that the police and school officials spent all day investigating the matter and found it to be nothing more than a rumor started by a kid who they identified and promised to punish appropriately. And don’t worry, plenty of police will be at the school in the morning. Watching my daughter struggle with whether she would go to school this morning (we left it entirely up to her), trying to assure her but feeling kind of uncomfortable telling her with 100% certainty that nothing would ever happen, fucking sucked. She went to work with my wife this morning. Half day anyway.

2. At my other kid’s school there was some sort of power struggle between the PTA and principal which among other fallout ended up with the P in the PTA being tasked with putting together the annual yearbook, where it had been something the T’s handled in the past. No one else volunteered, so my wife and took on the job. It meant a week of my wife finding time to scan in pictures at work and of me uploading and arranging and designing and matching pictures to names (luckily the yearbook design website wasn’t terrible). We had one teacher (our daughter’s 4th grade teacher) helping us out, sending us pictures from other teachers and helping identify kids. The books came in this week, and one of the teachers, one who didn’t contact us at all during the design process a month ago, is pissed about how her class is represented in the book and managed to find my wife’s email and send her a borderline bitchy message last night.

3. Soccer tournament in Hershey PA this weekend. I manage my daughter’s team, and was more than happy to work through the tournament’s travel agent (as required) to find a hotel where the team could stay as a group. Actually, roll that back. I was more than happy to not have that job this year as another parent said she would handle it. But she didn’t and didn’t and didn’t and when I finally got frustrated and picked it up it was (A) relatively late in the process so the hotel selection was scarce and (B) I was asked to find a hotel that could house our team and three others from our club. There was literally one hotel with enough rooms left to accommodate that many families (needed to allow for at least 14 or 15 rooms per team). I swear to fucking god the first fucking person not on my kid’s team I hear bitch about the Radisson Harrisburg this weekend is getting Toomi Lahren’d.

As for point 1, that sucks. Truly.

I hate to say this, especially because so many of you still have kids in school.

While I'm very proud of my daughter and all that shit, a huge piece of me is just straight up relieved she's not going to be going to a high school anymore. I know Va Tech happened, and there was something up in Canada, but it just seems like high school aged kids are so jacked up on hormones and bullying and social stuff gets so out of hand...

Just happy to get her out... Fucking bizarre where we are as a country/culture right now.

#1 - Back at school today.

#2 is blowing up this morning as the teacher sent a pissed off email to the PTA lamenting that not all of the students were treated fairly because her photos weren't included, and that we spelled one of her kid's names wrong. I feel like shit about the latter, but in general I'm pissed to be dealing with this. The PTA president forwarded the email to my wife, and she's on our side here, but I sent a barely restrained response back to her asking her to leave my wife alone and bug me since I did most of the work.

As for #3, the place was in a good location, and the pool was pretty nice and there was a nice enough bar on the grounds, but that was about it. The front desk staff were overwhelmed and it showed in their interactions with the guests. The rooms were pretty small, and um, well-worn? All of that would have been acceptable until I woke up Sunday AM with 4 or 5 bites of indeterminate origin on my chest/stomach. We thoroughly checked the beds before moving into the room, and even more thoroughly that morning, and saw no classic evidence of bed bugs. My oldest was in that same bed both nights, and my wife slept in it on Friday with no issues. And I did spend almost 6 hours outside at a park and in the grass on Saturday afternoon. But enough was enough and we checked out a day early, and got our Saturday night comped. Our luggage is still sitting outside on our back patio.

Up for a #4? Great. We're having our kitchen remodeled and spent all day yesterday clearing it out with demo due to start Thursday. Can't wait to see what that brings.

I just accomplished the online training and exam for serving alcohol. My squadron's booster club is able to serve food and stuff at the Isotopes games for fund raising purposes. In order to serve alcohol, you need a license obviously. I but the bullet and figured what the hell. I am licensed for 3 years thereafter so I could work in a taproom or something if I get bored.

Well the takeaway from the CBT is that I'm liable for anything and everything when giving someone alcohol. Gauging their ability to process is based on age, gender, weight..etc. Tracking how many I've given to a person and guess how tipsy they are likely to be when ordering again. Being ultra polite and not being judgmental when I have to cut off someone so I don't hurt feelings. Knowing that even if a person exhibits zero attributes of being tipsy, I'm still at fault if that person kills someone via DUI on the way home. De-escalating potential violent confrontations with the utmost of professionalism.

The juggling of variables is offputting and I understand the need for responsibility when serving people, but can this country at least rely on adults to be a little self-policing and responsible when they decide to drink? This feels a little too much like the Air Force if your Airman or Wingman decides to become stupid on a Saturday and it's your responsibility to stop him. Just seems so dumb. Everyone is to blame for everything all of the time.

FIFY

Remember that the "responsibility" you are being required to take is not the responsibility to the person ordering the drinks. It is to the person who is endangered when that drunk person drives home. It is the kid who can't afford to go to college because his dad was killed by a drunk driver.

No, I get that. But the conduit here is the guy/girl hellbent on getting drunk in the first place.

If I'm serving drinks in a setting and mixing them appropriately and that guy then hits up other bartenders or servers, we're all at fault for the actions afterward but we could all reasonably be ignorant to exactly how drunk the guy could be at any one time.

I have to non scientifically decide "that's too much," but if he just arrived and I gave him one I'm still liable if he had 6 more after me and kills a person.

Basically, Americans are assholes when drinking and everyone is affected for their actions after the fact.

Sure, but to Johnnie's point, put 20 people in a bar and have them each drink to a 0.20 and the process and results are going to be all over the place.

I mean, it's one thing if you are part of a bar staff at a location where you can kind of keep track of the patrons. At a ballpark? I would think you're only going to be on the hook if it's pretty obvious someone is hammered walking up to your booth.

With that said, they shutdown a Hooters in Rockville after someone got shit-faced and ran into police officer who was making a traffic stop. That place had a history of that type of stuff.

If he had six drinks after you, you wouldn't be liable, because that wouldn't be your fault. Simlarly, if you did not have notice yourself that someone was visibly intoxicated, you wouldn't be liable.

I don't think you would be personally liable anyway, just the bar you work for. But perhaps I'm wrong about that.

Well, there was a great deal of doom and gloom within the training. It seemed to paint the picture that you have to be held liable for everything while being a perfect person in terms of customer service and de-escalation of potentially bad situations.

Probably just the training company covering their asses in all actuality.

That's kind of what I was thinking.

Not the same, but since we're in the Random thread, my daughter and friends are headed to beach week in about 10 days. Earlier in the spring, Dewey sent one of its police officers to basically do a scared straight session at our high school.

A lot of useful information, but also a lot of "you're going to get arrested, you probably shouldn't even go" type stuff.

Yeah, my kid is going to relatively family-oriented Bethany.

They wrote up and emailed a list of rules that all the girls have to sign, copying the parents. They have circulated a contact sheet. A parent is booking a hotel room and there will be check-ins at midnight and 9am.

And I basically took all the "you're going to get arrested" stuff from the cop and fed it back to my daughter and her friends as "what not to do" list. They won't circulate that to the parents, but hopefully they'll keep their shit together.

The scenario the cop painted:

Home owners pretty grudgingly rent out these homes, knowing that high schoolers are the worst. They've got your money and are looking for any kind of excuse to boot these kids to avoid damage to the home. So they camp out while you are moving in, hoping to see some dumb-dumb lugging in cases of beer (or whatever.) They will drive by the house in the evening, hoping to find kids out on the deck drinking beers or hosting a party (pretty easy to spot if you rented to a group of girls and dudes are all over the place. They will look in the windows, looking for stuff, etc.

The bottomline is that you need to be smart about partying. It's' not a free-for-all situation.

1a. It was a combined meeting with another large school (Whitman). Combined enrollment is probably around 3000? Maybe closer to 4000.

1b. The room was packed with both students and parents. Conservatively estimate about 250+.

2) We are 3.5 hours from the MD/DE beaches, but it kind of reinforces the point that the high school beach weeks (which I think begin this week and go through mid-June) had been turning into a shitshow for the locals. It's worth their time to drive up here and at a minimum open some eyes, with (presumably) the goal of convincing parents not to send their kids out there.

3) Here's what I don't understand about that mindset (in terms of parents saying no)... In almost every case I'm aware of, a parent is either staying in the house or chaperoning from a satellite location. It's not like they are completely unsupervised.

Also... Your kid is about to go to college in 3 months. What the fuck do you think is going to happen then? It's a really weird blinders on situation for these people. Gonna have to let go at some point.

Tried to watch his recent standup, as well as Ali Wong's new Netflix specials. Didn't care for either. Really liked Tig Notaro's though.

I watched the first 10 minutes of ALi Wong and it was not very engaging. I'll finish it eventually, but I'm in no hurry.

Ali's first one was much tighter of a set.

I still liked Mulaney's new one, he's just going to have a tough time topping "New in Town".

Just watched both Ali Wongs over the last few nights.

i think she's good, not great, but my wife had to pause the second one because she was about to piss herself. Literally - the bit about oral sex in the playground.

The Mulvaney one from Radio City was the best stand up I've seen in a while (out of maybe ten shows, so a smallish sample). Something about the guy makes me laugh - his Broadway show with Nick Kroll had me crying while my wife and daughter barely tolerated it.

Started the Hari Kandobolo one (he's been on ":Wait Wait..." as well as "The Bugle") A bit awkward on stage, but pretty good.

We started Ali Wong but the voice changes drove me insane.
