Something seems wrong if a pro golfer does not have an emergency identical bag that can be given to a courier and delivered anywhere with 24 hours notice.

I think you underestimate how much pro golfers tinker with their equipment. It isn't uncommon for pros to alter the lofts of their clubs each week based on specific shots they think they'll hit during a round. For example, they might increase the loft on their pitching wedge if they expect they'll need to hit a lot of lofted shots to the green. And while pros are so good they should be able to play fairly well with any set of clubs, not having your own clubs is a definite disadvantage.

But that is my point. I just imagine that each golfer has a garage full of clubs, bags, gloves, etc. I bet that each club is organized by loft, material, grip type, shaft, head material, etc. The only thing that should differ is wear and tear. Just guessing that each golfer should have 2 of each. I know at tournaments the manufactures are there to assist, fix, provide clubs as needed so building to spec should not be too hard.

The comparable is the ability for a pro cycling team to have an identical bike for each rider on site in the middle of nowhere France within 12 hours of a problem (i.e all your bikes get stolen from the hotel).

You might be surprised to learn that people play golf here in the summer. Also soccer, baseball...all kinds of stuff.

I presume the course they have in mind is either TPC-Summerlin, about 800 feet higher up than the Strip or Red Rock Country Club, about 1,200 feet higher than the Strip (about 5 degrees cooler) and which is shaded earlier by sunset because of the nearby mountains. If they setup lights on the last four or so holes, they could do a 4:30 p.m. PT start and play in prime time and it would be relatively comfortable.

(Of course, it's moot, but...

So I was in a scramble a month ago and won tickets to the opposite field event next week. First time PGA has been this close. ANyway I figured it was just four-day general admission tickets, because that's what the voucher said. Nope. VIP parking (most are being shuttled in from Keeneland, 5-6 miles away) and admission to a sponsor chalet all four days. Free food and open bar.

All because I could hit a marshmallow further than anyone else. Noice.

It's pretty understandable, though, right? He was the best player of his generation. The first African-American to hit the highest echelon of his sport. A tabloid-frenzied, high-speed fall from grace, but still a guy with popularity that transcends his sport.

If you want to get annoyed by the media attention paid to a sports guy who doesn't deserve it, I'd focus on Tim Tebow.

But yeah. That was my point, sure.

Not sure this is an improvement. Especially the part about credit for winning the tournament even if you did not actually win the tournament.

Not for what amounts to a season-long performance and a shot at $15M prize. Should be some kind of a reward for dominating to the point where you're the points leader going into the final event. And it's 10 strokes over only the guys from 21 to 30. The second place guy starts at 8-under. 16th to 20th starts at 2-under, etc.

Matt Kuchar said Wednesday that he doesn't regret paying caddie David Giral Ortiz $5,000 from the $1.296 million he received for winning the Mayakoba Classic in November.

The amount has been criticized by some as being too small; caddie deals on the PGA Tour vary greatly, but there is often an extra amount thrown in for top-10 finishes and typically a 10 percent bonus for a win.

It well and truly is-ish.

I imagine that this caddy probably agreed to a flat fee because he was just a one-off, which is kind of normal. That said, once Kuchar won he should have kicked him some extra, even if it wasn't the full caddy share.

ETA: A local fill-in caddy has fairly limited value to a touring pro. The really good ones will be able to help read the greens and give yardages, but he isn't gonna have a feel for the clubs Kuch is gonna use, or how he likes to work the ball, how much he spins it or how to calm him down, etc. So expecting a full share might be a bit much, however the guy did seem to just be looking for 50 grand, and Kuch likely should have just paid him that.

I think even like an extra $20K at the time of the win and no one would have ever known about this. From what I understood of this story, this guy doesn't even speak much English so I'm guessing he was basically just lugging his clubs as opposed to a lot of the stuff a caddy would typically do (like AB said), but that said only paying $5K after a win is ridiculous.

Seems pretty par for the course (nice). Find yourself in a bad spot, use minority to help you through that bad spot, find unexpected windfall, blame minority for not being in position where he could have had that windfall, shun minority. Did I get it right?

A wrinkle to this is that Kuchar's people offered him an additional $15k and he said "keep it" and went to Golf magazine.

So, I'm a little torn on it. Kuchar absolutely was being an asshole not to give him $10 or 15k up front, but then not just taking the overall $20k has the caddy being a dickhead.

But to AB and brian's point, no way is he entitled to the "customary" 10 percent that goes to stand-in tour caddies. Local knowledge is fine, but guys at Kuchar's level get what they need on that front after a few practice rounds/walking the course. Very limited value for a guy that's a club caddie with limited English.

Yeah, it's almost literally pennies for Kuchar and life-changing money for the caddy. Wonder if it would have been worth $50K to not have the embarrassment at having this aired out... and the story of him doing this for the caddy would have ended up getting out, too, which probably would have gotten him some additional sponsorship/public speaking gigs to more than recoup the 50K.

Put another way (as a comms/marketing guy) Kuchar should be pissed at his agent (or whatever similarly positioned suit made the decision), because $50k would've been worth the amount of free media he would've garnered by PUSHING THE STORY OUT. Pretty dumb, actually.

Kevin Van Valkenburg tweeted something similar, as Kuchar's "appeal" is his golly gee, oh shucks, likeable persona.
Until everything is less insane, I'm mixing weed with wine.
