FMD: Movies that "Own" Certain Music

Post by Johnny Carwash »

A couple days ago in the Commercials thread, rass noted the appearance of "Push It" in a couple of newer commercials, which strikes me as almost sacrilegious due to its use in the single greatest commercial of all time a few years back.

This got me thinking along the same lines in relation to movies. Which movies have used a piece of music (could be a pop/rock song, classical, jazz, whatever) in a way so iconic that the movie can be said to "own" the piece, to the point that it seems cliched or downright wrong for any other movie to use it?

A few nominees:

Die Hard (Beethoven's 9th Symphony)
Apocalypse Now (Ride of the Valkyries)
Pulp Fiction (Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon)
Goodfellas (Layla)
Stripes (Doo Wah Diddy)

And I mentioned it back in the Movies thread over the summer, but I love how Guardians of the Galaxy not only integrated the music into the movie, but into the story itself. Moonage Daydream

So you mean the song wasn't written for the soundtrack?

Right. Though the S&G songs from that movie took on lives of their own to the point that it kind of applies there, too.

Of course there's Moving in Stereo for Fast Times although Somebody's Baby even more so but I think that was written for the soundtrack.

If you're saying Total Eclipse is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Old School, then I think you're coming at it from the other direction. I still can't hear Dust in the Wind without wanting to shout "you're my boy, Blue".

(PS, the Dan Band (the wedding band from Old School) has a pretty good Christmas album. Try to get this song out of your head.)

See, to me the song of that movie is whatever the name of the Cars song is when Phoebe Cates is getting out of the pool.

When I hear Whiter Shade of Pale, I think of The Big Chill. But for that movie, you could also go with You Can't Always Get What You Want.

Honestly, I've seen SOTL many times, but that song didn't ring a bell. I remember the scene, of course.

Another one for me is Foxy Lady - Wayne's World.
