Ever seen a blind man cross the road
Trying to make the other side
Bus stop rat hag
Charade you are, inside

They told me you missed school today
You fucked up old hag you are
The handbags and glad rags
Your grandad had to radiate cold shafts
Of broken glass for you to buy

(That Rod Stewart album barely made a dent in the US, in stark contrast to his next solo record two years later, "Every Picture Tells a Story". So this is the cover that introduced me to the tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ThzF3JtFiE
I have a feeling DC47 will have some thoughts on Bill Chase. Our high school jazz band sure loved his stuff. Well, every high school jazz band in the early 70s.)

I'm trying to decide if there's another musician whose career ultimately disappointed me as much as Rod Stewart's has/did. I mean, yeah, he'd always do a cover, but you'd get dirt under your fingernails just listening to that earthy sound in those early discs (not sleeping on The Faces, either)...Gasoline Alley? A Nod is Good as a Wink..to a Blind Horse? Ooh La La?

But then the Stones up and stole Ron Wood, Ronnie Lane died and then he found hairspray and began wondering about hot legs and if people think he's sexy.

I'd extrapolate further into the abyss where he released cover LPs and traded in his overalls for 3 piece suits...But it's just depressing.

I love early Rod Stewart/Faces. He went to shit in the late-70s, but I still love to listen to his first few solo albums, any Faces album, and also his stuff with the Jeff Beck Group. You guys can have your intellectual prog. I'll take gut-bucket bluesy rock.

I just re-read what I wrote, and perhaps my point didn't come across as clear as I'd liked:

I loved early Rod Stewart.

I love 60% of prog. Especially the earlier stuff, but hit a limit. Now good boogie blues or some psych pop. I'm digging that all night long.

BTW let me know next time you're in town, we gotta hit our local world class beer bar.

Sadly our vendor has gone online training, and it's three years until the conference might be on the west coast. Baltimore this year (well Nat'l harbor) and Orlando next. Woo hoo.

Jorma, man he is so great. Jack too, and Papa John on that clip. Don't settle for Cold Turkey when you can have Hot Tuna!

I caught Jack a few years ago, he was playing with Moonalice, and I last saw Jorma about 5-6 years ago, he is a virtuoso.

1976. I was into blues, beebop and bluegrass. But then came the inescapable first album by Boston. Hook-filled tunes, Brad Delp's sweet lead and harmony vocals, and Tom Scholz's amazing guitar that was all about his multi-tracking and studio effects. The album was a big part of the soundtrack to that amazing year.

The album was loaded with radio hits. My favorite song was one of the other ones, Hitch A Ride.

This was the demo version with different lyrics:

I'm not sure what it is, but I've never liked Boston. I used actively hate them. That's mellowed now, but I still don't like their stuff. I appreciate that it's technically good, and some of their song intros are great, but once he starts in with that falsetto, I have to change channels.

Brad Delp wasn't singing in falsetto. He hit those notes naturally.

Boston was classic in the sense that, their first LP from start to finish, garnered airplay from AOR format radio stations. Golden age of rock, baby.

Parties, radio, driving in the car, your buddy's apartment -- Boston was there. And before that, they were nowhere. Really came out of the blue.

It wasn't the music I naturally liked. But for what it was, it was brilliant. Amazing execution. Bands really couldn't cover their stuff -- they couldn't make it sound right. And for someone who was really into popular music, winter of '76 was the Winter of Boston. Wall-to-wall. My life was then on fire, in both senses, so it's a sound I'll never forget.

Boston will never be one of my favorite bands. But whenever I hear one of the tunes from their first album, a smile crosses my face.

Nice. Can't wait to hear the album.

I associate Blind Willie Johnson with some early blues classics. But can't recall any specific ones except this and 'John the Revelator.'

This song has drawn some tremendous covers. Led Zep, Dylan, Clapton, Nina Simone, Paul Butterfield -- I think they've all recorded it. My favorite version was done by The Blind Boys of Alabama. I just found this live rendition, with some remarkable guests.

The Blind Boys of alabama are on the album too. And Tom Waits does a version of "John The Revelator."

Good cover albums feature musicians with unique voices. Not just random singers playing a tune that they're not known for. Those are certainly two amazing voices. I expect they really dig in.
