I saw Zevon in concert a couple times. He put on a fun show.

That Steve Forbert tune was nice. I still have "Romeo's Tune" on active playlist.
Hey, do we have any Tommy Bolin fans out there? He was only 25 when he died of a drug overdose, but he had an interesting career. He was a teenager in a band in Boulder when he came to the attention of Joe Walsh who was also living there at the time. Walsh was quitting the James Gang and recommended Tommy Bolin as his replacement. Tommy also played some jazz fusion stuff with Billy Cobham and others. Then, he was recruited to replace Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. I read that being a replacement for guitar heroes was hard on his psyche because the fans at live shows were always yelling out, "where's Joe?", or "where's Ritchie?". Ah, well... he managed to also put out two fine solo records along the way before he died.

Of course this is a very well known song, but I like the story of how they came to use a harpsichord on it.

Love that Canterbury sound (and more people need to listen to Hatfield)
I always find it interesting to note the bands that seem to hit their commercial and/or artistic peak later in the career. For example, Pink Floyd had already put out a bunch of albums before they went on their incredible run of Dark Side through The Wall. Or Fleetwood Mac who hit it ultra big with Rumours, which was their 11th album.
But this week, after reading one of those great Twitter threads about Willie Nelson, I decided to go play some of his albums, something I've never really done. And then I saw his discography. His best run of albums started with Red Headed Stranger (or possibly its predecessor, Phases and Stages) which was his 18th album. 18th!
And the dude has put out 95 solo or collaborative albums. Just mind-blowing. I guess he kind of contradicts the lazy stoner stereotype, huh?

It's really crazy the volume of work people put out back in the day.

I think of that "Outlaws" album Willie made with Waylon, Tompall Glaser and Jessie Colter as the restart to career, this time as a rebel (as the title would imply.)
Of course, Fleetwood Mac might as well have had three different names, since their career included three completely different iterations of the group, which didn't sound anything alike and only had the name, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie in common. The "mach one" Peter Green version was great British blues rock. The "mach two" Bob Welch version had some good stuff, too. Of course, we all know about the third version.

Yeah, and that's kinda true (to a lesser degree) with Pink Floyd too. But both buck the common pattern where a band's best albums are the first few albums.

When they moved from Syd to Roger there was a huge paradigm shift. I like me some early Floyd, but I'm a Meddle and Animals man with Dark Side getting the bronze (though Breathe is higher up than any Animals tune in the ranking of tunes on those albums, and Fearless is tops (aside from the Liverpool bit at the end.)

I loved the cowpunk bands of the early/mid 1980s. Here's one of the stalwarts of the genre, Jason and the Scorchers, covering Bob Dylan's "Absolutely Sweet Marie". (Sounds a bit different than Bob's version.)
My mom was driving us to go get new sneakers when I first heard this song. Winter '81.

I'm more of a Xanadu / second side of 2112/Careess man, but I hear you.
(I do wish it wasn't the encore at so many shows, like we're Rush fans...we know the song (we'll we know them all, we just don't need to hear the radio tune.))

yup, true. But in 2002 after their hiatus* they came out and *started* with Tom Sawyer? Now THAT was money.
*also i was 3rd row center at their first show back after 6 years away - Hartford CT. It was a little misty in there...

What a 1. weird place to start a tour
2. extra weird place to start a "welcome back" tour
