OFFICIAL Eat Right & Get Fit Challenge

Post by Johnnie »

Haven't seen the continuation from the previous board, so I guess I'll start it.

This past weekend up in Seoul my CrossFit Box (CrossFit Osan) went and visited CrossFit Sentinel and we did Open WOD 13.3.

I, as usual, did mediocre, but the good shit happened at :49 of the enclosed video. Lori, currently 9th on the Asia regional leaderboard, took down the house with that muscle up you just saw. I actually stopped my workout because it was so damn awesome.

I find myself getting more and more into working out every week since I've been doing it, but I have zero interest in turning it into any sort of competition.

On another note, I passed a crossfit gym while out driving. It was named "Grassfed Crossfit", which definitely had me lolling all the way home.

I looked into the monthly costs for the local Crossfit facility, and my jaw damn near hit the floor. It was something like $130 a month. Fuck that.

I got a mailer yesterday from some kind of chain gym that appears to cost only $10 per month. And they guaranteed no lunkers, or lurkers, or something like that. Good deal?

That's quite possibly the dumbest CrossFit Box name I've ever heard. I Googled it. What's the deal with Medford, NY?

One of the biggest knocks on CrossFit and I tend to agree. That's very close to the military rate at most boxes in Tucson. Typically it's about $150 a month there. On average nationwide, that's very, very low. One of the more well known CrossFit spots, San Francisco CrossFit, charges $275 per month. Quite frankly, if it weren't for military affiliation or a reduced price for us, I'd very likely never do it.

I know the owner of the Albany, NY CrossFit franchise, and she told me last year she charges $100 a month. I thought that amount was ridiculous, but I guess she offers a pretty good deal. She told me I could come to her gym and try it while I was in town, but I didn't have the time.

Read somewhere that pushups were the single best exercise you can do (if you do them with good form). Not that I do them.

I've been getting back into my routine, and posting my weight on fatbet. Where are the rest of you?

I bought Run Faster, Run Less, by the Runner's World crew, and have skimmed it and tried to implement my own cliff's notes version of it.

Each week is spent with one day doing sprints, one day doing a tempo run, and one day doing a long run. For me it's been between 6-8 sprints of 150-200 yds, about 3 miles at an elevated pace, and a slower long run.

After 2 weeks, my normal 8:00-8:15 minute mile average on a 5k run has turned into about 7:11 or so per mile for 3 miles.

I'm also taking testy boxcar's approach, and I'm back to 150 pushups a night. It's free, corncobs.
Until everything is less insane, I'm mixing weed with wine.

That's a pretty good routine. I like it. Sprints -- especially hill sprints -- are one of the most excellent ways to shave your run time. I'm a fan.

As for me, I'm sticking to the daily routine at my box (gym). I'll do whatever's posted and then I'll do extra strenth work as well. I'm a ginormous fan of switching things up daily. Yesterday was a sprint day with some heavy thrusters afterward for strength and working on my double unders after that. Today will be more heavy thrusters with burpee pulls ups (and I'll still do more double under work -- that'll be a daily thing until I can string 50 together). Tomorrow? Who knows. But this weekend will be Open exercise 13.5.

But let's post some videos of CrossFit girls for your viewing enjoyment. First is Camille LeBlanc-Bazinet. She's pretty.

And now Andrea Ager (gray shorts) & my peronal fave, Rita Benavidez.

I had originally written something along the lines of "gee ab that was a really long winded way to tell bronto you don't read his articles" but decided that was too long itself. Sorry if that sounded harsh. I'll make up for it by saying that your MIL must have really liked you to risk stealing from her office to make you happy.

In 20 minutes, live from Santa Cruz, CA, the 5th CrossFit Open workout will be broadcast live.

Froning v. Khalipa for the men & Briggs v LeBlanc-Bazinet for the ladies.

4 of the biggest names in the sport. Currently they are replaying Holmberg v Spealler.

I just read Bronto's fitness articles -- they are good. He interviews experts who have a sophisticated but still simple (a good thing) approach to basic fitness, and adeptly captures some fundamental thoughts that suit an audience on the 'regular human being' half of the exercise spectrum. This kind of piece is harder than it looks. Nice work!

I started on a diet at the end of the summer, after tipping in at 315. Figured enough was enough. Started out doing south beach diet for the first two months, up until Thanksgiving basically. That was my first major hurdle though, as I decided I had done a good enough job up until that point to deserve a birthday meal of my choosing and Thanksgiving without worrying about the diet. The problem was, any other time I had gotten off a diet, I could never get back on, and would regain all the weight lost in no time.

My plan this time was simple: Take Thanksgiving week off, eat whatever I wanted, including all the foods I couldn't eat on the diet, but loved, and then do a one week cleanse after Thanksgiving where I would redo Phase 1 of South Beach (for those who are unfamiliar, it's basically zero carbs). This time I was able to get right back on the horse and keep going. After the one week cleanse not only had I lost any weight put back on during my hiatus, I also lost an additional two pounds.

So I did the same thing at Christmas, went off the diet for the week and then cleansed, and here we are in April and I am still going on the diet, now down a total of 40 pounds. I've even changed the diet since then, and am not really doing south beach anymore. Now it's just portion control and not overeating carbs. The only real catbs I have in a week is my morning oatmeal and a pizza on a friday night, plus whatever noodles or rice are in my soup.

My first goal is getting to 250 then seeing how I look and making a better judgement about the end goal weight, but I am thinking now in the 225 range by the end of 2013.

You should totally make them look stupid by having someone take a picture of you doing a real squat then posting it with a message like "FACE!!!" or something.

It's *technically* a squat. But it's all done wrong. Let Jim Schmitz, Team USA Olympic coach, give you a detailed description of squatting.

Of course this video will have a bar with weight. I get that. But the form for an air squat will remain the same.

Yeah, she's not all the way down, but I assumed that she's on the way up or down. Otherwise, it looks just like this Crossfit squat:

Yeah, she's not all the way down, but I assumed that she's on the way up or down. Otherwise, it looks just like this Crossfit squat:

She very well could be -- but most people aren't going to assume that and think that's all the depth they need to do.

And simply from the screenshot of that crossfit video, there's a clear difference in depth. The blond girl is parallel, the girl in the squat challenge picture has still got a ways to go

(Note: It's not like it's a gross misrepresentation of the exercise. It's just not a good demonstration picture)

In that vid you posted she breaks parallel, but you really want to get deeper. Also he isn't telling you to "load your hamstrings and glutes" on the way up. That very important.

Also, it really seems like in the photo that her shins are aren't vertical enough. It simply doesn't look like her weight is on her heels.

I just wish they'd have given before, during, and after pics to not give the wrong impression. People will think "Damn, I only gotta do that a bunch of times and my ass will get firm? Awesome!"
