I was mostly uninterested but heard he did "Fake Plastic Trees" which he would either make sound really great or unbearably twee.

He did that on Monday, and it sounded great (to me...your mileage may vary).

I missed it yesterday, but he did New Order's 'Ceremony'...

starts about 40 minutes in.

Alright, threw on the Tuesday show. 5 year old yelled "THIS SONG MAKES ME FALL ASLEEP" 45 seconds in.

[Ben Gibbard coughs]
8 year old (accustomed to only studio music): "Why did he do that?"
Me: [explains how this was recorded live and how and when he did it and all that]
8 year old: "That's still embarrassing."
5 year old: "What if he farted?"

Oh don't ruin that one ... I'm sure I mentioned here but I was walking around Somerville one day like a decade ago and an unseen girl was playing that on acoustic guitar and signing on her porch and it was amazing.

NO, I MERGED TWO SONGS. It was "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight". Your joke is funny now.

Well, that's the second time you fucked up that memory because you definitely mentioned it before. I remember because it was my thread (baddest-ass bass lines) and because someone (maybe zman?) got uncomfortably into how sexy your depiction was. Must have been a dead and gone swamp.

Clearing out the house and found this treasure trove of old tickets, most of which from before I even turned 21, some of which even before I was 16. Click on this link for a larger image

Oh definitely. Charlie Pierce's piece written for the end of Tiger Stadium is one of the finest things ever written about sports in my opinion. Worth a read for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

I watched the Hold Steady live stream Saturday night, and it was great. Man, I really miss live music.

Here's a nice write-up about their 'Massive Nights' weekend of shows.

Hold Steady: The strangely sweet community of a virtual rock show
But Thursday night I went to a Hold Steady show. I didn't go go, obviously, but I paid $15 to access the first of three shows for Massive Nights, the band's annual dayslong residency at Brooklyn Bowl, which I've attended every year. It was beautiful and...sweet...in a totally unexpected way, considering it was a show by America's Greatest Bar Band.

I'm feeling open today so someone give me the easiest Hold Steady album to get into. Whatever is most representative but maybe with a bonus of less "irony voice" punchline heavy, talk-singing?

I was curious if concerts were going on, so I opened this thread. Seems I last opened this thread in 2015. Always weird going back and reading the time capsule and new posts from Howard! Not sure I'll make it through 15+ pages, it's like you guys are writing in a foreign language, but I'm glad MisterD liked my suggestion of Haymaker Bar suggestion. I can't believe it's been over 5 years since I discovered it. Damn, time is losing all meaning.

Still plan every NYC client visit around Haymaker. Gotta leave 30 minutes extra before catching my train, and hope they are selling Other Half cans.

It was kind of hilarious the organizers thought this WOULDN'T happen

NoFX will never play another live show in Vegas again.

In a shitty Canuckistani bar watching a shitty Mexican cover band mangle 70/80s Van Hagar-type covers but it’s the first live music I’ve seen in 15 months so it’s kind of great.

They played “Baba O’Riley, Where The Streets Have No Name and “Another Brick In The Wall” in a row and not very credibly but it’s better than anything else the last 15 mos

Picking up on the convo from Random Thoughts... I think festivals are itching to go and just grabbing whatever bands are available.

I just got my first post-pandemic concert tickets...Bob Mould at the end of September.

I would guess that Bob Mould (in various incarnations) is the act I've seen the most times playing live.
