Earlier in the tourney I brought up that Jones finally stopped getting stupid cards. What a fucking waste. I can't imagine appealing, because it looked like he did touch the guys face, no matter how lightly and harmlessly. You just can't do that. I could see the ref letting that go or giving a yellow, but the ref followed the law on that one.

No way in hell Beckerman can hold his own against Argentina. Messi, Higuain and Aguerro? Fuck. In a semifinal, I can only see Jurgen fielding his most trusted and experienced players. I just don't think that gives the US a chance at beating Argentina. In a way, they are playing with house money. They achieved the goal of reaching the semis, and are up against a vastly more skilled team. Put in some high risk/reward guys and take a fucking shot at it. Argentina is going to keep possession, so we need to game plan for counter attacks. Wondo isn't a lot of things, and a counter attacker is top of that list. Jordan Morris would be great in that role, not sure if that is Pulisic's game. Zardes has the speed to do it, but not the ability. I really like the 5-3-3 here, with Yedlin and Johnson pushing forward as wingbacks.

______Cameron____Brooks_____Besler
Yedlin________________________Johnson
_______________Bradley

_______________Nagbe
Zardes (or Zusi)______________Pulisic
________________Dempsey

I could aslo get behind putting Besler in at left back, pushing Johnson to midfield and putting Pulisic uptop with Dempsey

Sporting is hosting Pachuca and Santos Laguna tomorrow for a friendly. That's going to be such an empty stadium, unless there's a large contingent of Liga MX fans here in KC that I'm unaware of. SKC called me last week asking me if I wanted tickets (I didn't answer).

I would be absolutely shocked if Beckerman doesn't start. I agree with you, he can't hold up, but JK sees him as a less likely to lose his positioning version of Jones.

But, really, the one that hurts the most is Wood. We just aren't going to be able to replace what he has brought to this tournament.

I also agree with Johnson going into the midfield with a heavy emphasis on covering for Besler when ARG gain possession.

Looks like someone at DirecTV has a sense of humor.

I just set my DVR to record tonight's game, and here's a description of the episode:
"United States vs. Argentina"
United States, led by Kyle Beckerman, will rely on their strong defense as it takes on the best player in the world, Lionel Messi, and no. 1 ranked Argentina in a semifinal match.

I will say this. The fact that ARG is without Di Maria is one small check on the US side of the ledger (or whatever tortured metaphor you want to clumsily throw out there.) That dude would be an absolute terror for our back line. Higuain is a beast, but I honestly think our CBs are up to that task. I don't like the idea of Yedlin doing his "oh shit, time for the jetpack to recover" stuff and while Johnson is capable, I still don't like that matchup.

maybe I'm nuts, but a 5-4-1 with Johnson and Yedlin as wingbacks, Beckerman providing cover with a higher three of Zusi/Bradley/Zardes and Dempsey up top would be cool with me

Yup. Worst case scenario, but very predictable. I feel like he is playing to lose by a not embarrassing score, like 3-0. My one thought on Wondo, is he can play holdup with his back to the goal and distribute. With Zardes' speed, he could run onto a pass and boot his first touch over the end line. That'll waste 60 seconds, leaving Argentina less time to score.

Beckerman being on the field keeps making me think of Ricardo Clark against Ghana in 2010. Slow, old DM with no business being on the field against quality teams.

Lalas is always a homer before the game, then way over the top critical when they lose.

Did the rules on kickoffs change? The U.S. just kicked the ball backwards. I thought the rule was it had to take one revolution forward (which is hwy you have two people up there)
