I haven't watched a replay since last night but I thought he read the side Messi was shooting to pretty well. It was just a perfect shot.

Yup. Guzan almost touched it. At a full diagonal stretch. The ball bounced off the crossbar. To think that wasn't "covered" is insane.

I know its Messi and all but that goalie was positioned and tapping his feet as the guy ran up to kick it. So its kinda hard for me to accept that he wouldnt have gotten there if he doesnt move the wrong direction. Its real easy to say that its a perfect shot from the perfect player but the reality from the video is that he probably gets there if takes the first step left. Im not even saying that they guy did a bad job, just that the US version of Messi is likely to be a goalie so we need guys to step up and make great plays. Moving the wrong direction when the ball is kicked is hardly at that level.

He doesn't step the wrong way. He saw it, he got beat. It was an incredible kick by the best player on the planet.

ETA... Looking at it five, six times, I'll give it a slight step the wrong way. Very slight. He was still in very good position to make that save and it took amazing precision to place it where he did with the pace he put on the ball.

If he had taken a full step the wrong way, he would've done the deer in the headlights/frozen/statue keeper thing you see when they know there's no chance to recover. (See first goal for a similar pose when he put himself in no man's land.)
If you cant see that, I cant help you. Full two footed jump to the right before he starts going back left. 0:17-0:18.
I'm really resisting the urge to flame here.

Imma let this go and not trot out my resume and all that shit. We disagree and that's fine.

He's loading up to go left, but whatever. Jumping flatfooted isn't optimal.

This tourney's been so poorly managed. All of the tickets are paper tickets, and overpriced. It's led to an inability to utilize stubhub, seat geek, etc., and led to sparse crowds. But hey, at least the scalp sites aren't making a killing!

I bought seats in the front row of the upper level for the games in Orlando, and when I got there, they gave me a random seat in the first level because they didn't sell enough upper seats to open the section. At least the knockout games have been entertaining.

I'm going to have to jump in with everyone else. Guzan is taking a bit of a hop to get momentum for a dive. Watch any goalkeeper on a free kick from a similar position, and almost every top class keep does this. Top class goalies get caught leaving early all the time, and that isn't what happened here. If he cheated early, he would have either froze in place, or lamely reached out a hand. Again, happens frequently in top flight games. Take the best keepers in the world, give them 100 tries to save that shot (without them knowing beforehand where it is going), and not one save is made. Absolutely impossible to stop that shot.

ETA: watching the GIF numerous times, Guzan is actually leaning to his left while hopping slightly to the right. It looks like he was expecting the shot to his left.

The nice thing about smacking someone in the face in a soccer game, even if you only lightly smack them, they will drop like a stone and writhe like they're having a seizure, and it makes you look like you punched the fuck out of them.

We could make that the new name of the Swamp. Or at least the motto (replace that 'feeding a nasty gambling habit' thing)

With the first red, you could actually read his face as he realized too late that Diaz was already on a yellow.

That should not matter. A 2nd yellow does not have to be a foul worse than the first yellow. Yellow is yellow

So is Mascherano. And from what I've read on Twitter, Lavezzi, Biglia and Higuain might go, too.

Sounds like the Argentina FA is an absolute mess right now and the players don't want to deal with it any more. That's probably the biggest reason so many are threatening to retire.
