Cricket

Post by teeteebee »

Anyone follow Cricket?

I've watched a game or two here or there for for small stretches of time on espn3.

I'm in St Kitts for a wedding and they are apparently having a pretty big tourney for the Carribbean teams. Bunch of players staying at our hotel.

Anyway, considering going to a match as it would be a cool experience, I'm sure. Though I don't know the rules or understand the game. Was watching a game at the hotel bar last night and a team was up like 141-9. But apparently that wasn't an insurmountable lead.

Figured someone on here watches/follows the game. I know it's extremely popular around the globe.

Worse case is my son and I go and we don't enjoy it. But it would, at a minimum, be a cool thing to say we've done. Not sure many 2nd graders in his class this upcoming year would have had a similar experience.

You'll have a great time. It's 20/20 Cricket, the fastest and most exciting version.
One team bats until either 10 men out or 120 pitches, and scores as many runs as possible. Then the other team chases. That's it.

141-9 is a poor score.

On my first trip to England I really wanted to see a cricket match. That is really something distinctive about the country as it is in modern times. More than old castles and museums. And it is one of the roots of my favorite sport.

But I went to a traditional match, and not a high level one. So it was pretty boring. It also didn't look that hard, which I believe is quite incorrect.

So I think you are quite fortunate to have this amazing opportunity. If your son is bored, you can always do what a good father does -- ply him with junk food so he'll shut up and let you watch the game.

You can also go to Parenting Strategy #2, by bribing him with a chance to do something that is typically forbidden, in the immediate future. Water balloons from the balcony comes to mind. Luggage cart races were big with my girls. We once had a gaggle of gangly teen basketball players pinned to the hotel hallway walls when we careened around a corner and came apon them on their way back from McDonalds. Drinks may have been spilled. It's now the stuff of family legend.

Further, Degen's video is excellent. I skipped the part about really understanding the rules before I saw my first match. Thought I'd somehow 'get it' because, well, how hard could it be? But I really didn't get it enough. It's the basis for understanding tactics, which I really didn't get and seem to matter.

The traditional match you went to has alot of strategy.

The match he will be going to is a smashfest. It might even have cheerleaders!

I see. I thought it was just going to be banging the ball with the flat bat. No big deal -- and not that challenging -- to someone used to baseball. You could even hit foul balls and it was good. The fielders couldn't even use gloves! So, KA-BOOM!

But that's not what I saw. My problem was I couldn't cleanly distinguish between clever tactical moves and simple bad play. I needed to know more to really enjoy the match.

I've seen more cricket since. So I'm beginning to get it. I now know about as much as I knew about baseball when I was about seven. But I regret not being able to see the sport played both well and in-person. You see stuff live you can't see on TV. And you definitely can't 'get' the speed of the ball.

In England I didn't see cheerleaders. I saw tea service; this was more exciting than much of the cricket. Is this kind of the same deal?

Why is the truncated form of cricket more of a "smashfest?"

Do they play much cricket up there north of the USA?

The key to remember is that a team gets 10 outs (wickets) in their half of 'an innings'. This is true regardless of the length/format of the game.

Test Match: This is the one you were watching. Both teams wear white and there is no limit on how long a team can bat. They bat until 10 guys get out. There are 90 overs per day split into roughly three 2-hour sessions, the first intermission is a 40 minute lunch and the 2nd intermission is a 20 minute tea break. This game is extremely slow because the batting team is trying to protect their wickets and bat as long as possible. They will sneak singles from time to time and maybe hit a mistake (pitch up in the zone) for 4 or 6 but it's rare. A good innings score is around 350 runs over 100 overs (600 balls). The team that scores the most runs over 2 innings, wins. If after 5 days neither team got 20 outs, it's a draw.

One-Day Cricket (ODI): In the 70s it was determined that 5-day test cricket was not tv friendly so they invented 50-over cricket. This included colored uniforms! In this version a team still gets 10 outs but can only bat for a maximum of 50 overs or 300 pitches. Each team bats 50 overs, whoever scores the most runs wins. This increased the scoring rate because the less outs a team makes and the closer they are to the end, they can gamble and hit harder without fear of getting out. A good score would be 300 runs over 50 overs (compared to the test cricket's 350 runs over 100 overs).

T20 Cricket: Once 50 over cricket got a bit boring they invented 20 over cricket to make it even faster. The 3 hour version.
Same concept 10 outs but only 20 overs (120 pitches). so it's pretty much smash the ball as hard as you can without much fear of getting out. It's really rare that a team loses all 10 wickets within 120 balls. A good score is around 170 runs over 20 overs.

that was a great play..

but in general if you get run out in test cricket you're an idiot. Getting run out trying to get 1 cheap run out of of 300+ is bad cricket.

Cricket World Cup started today. UK are hosts. Unfortunately, can't be seen in the US without a subscription to Willow TV, which isn't even available on all streaming services (not on Apple TV or Google Chromecast it appears).

Great battle between the Aussies and the West Indies right now. About 50/50 win probability with 20 overs to go. West Indies are chasing and if they get the win will be their biggest chase ever in World Cup history.

West Indies blew that one all the way around. Even after giving up all those late over runs, they still should have been able to outscore the Aussies.
