Dude Who Landed Gyrocopter on Capitol Lawn
FAA investigating Florida mailman's landing of gyrocopter on U.S. Capitol lawn
Some fascinating aspects of this story. Dude was fed up, but had no personal grievance that he has shared with the public. The Tampa Bay Times newspaper was aware of his plan, yet did not rat him out in the spirit of a free and independent press. They'll pay a heavy price for that, I bet.
Most importantly, the incompetence of our DHS protectors yet again on display. And this failure will be misused by them to justify mo money and mo power. The most shocking thing about 9/11 to me was the fact that the Pentagon had no effective air defenses, much less the Capitol and the White House.

Over the course of 30 years and 268 trials, 96% of FBI expert testimony regarding hair samples found at crime sites was inaccurate.
Not necessarily sent of this earth because of the hair samples, but this is sickening.Eighteen of those defendants were living on death row -- 12 had been executed.
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/fbi-hair-an ... ort-finds/Cleveland Wright spent 28 years -- almost half his life behind bars -- serving time for a 1978 murder.
His conviction, it now turns out, was based on a false FBI hair analysis.
"I didn't know anything about forensics. I didn't know too much about law when I got arrested and locked up, but I just knew I was innocent," Wright said.

The now-secret files will someday reveal that the mailman was CIA. What better way to boost government security spending?howard wrote:FAA investigating Florida mailman's landing of gyrocopter on U.S. Capitol lawn

I know, I know. But people laughed for decades when it was said that the CIA was doing LSD experiments. Also, the fake moon landing.
I'm sure the Pentagon has great air defenses. Just against large planes that take off in Russia so they give them at least an hour to scramble the fighters. It's said that the military always prepares to fight the last war. But sometimes they just fixate on WWII and the Battle of Britain, because that was so awesome.

I wish the article explained HOW the analysis was faulty. How were they identifying hair before DNA analysis? Just looking at it under a microscope like they do with bullets?

Re: The Important Sounds of Things Falling Apart
My brother's blacksmith, who we were pretty good friends with, shot and killed his soon-to-be ex-wife and then took his own life late in April. We just found out about it last night from a blurb in the BloodHorse (horse racing) magazine, since she had an award winning book about horse gravestones about 15 years ago. I would have never thought he was capable of such a thing, but my brother said he was always on the edge of crazy so it doesn't really surprise him. Article here

Re: The Important Sounds of Things Falling Apart
Wow. I have to turn in my skeptics card, or at least get it updated. That's a whole lot more gun violence here in the sacred homeland than I had implicitly assumed. It's almost as if I've been distracted by the exciting images of evil arabs blowing up good arabs in desert lands half-way around the globe, and have somehow internalized the evil ones as the singular threat to peace and security in America.
On a somewhat related note, I wonder what the average American would estimate as the death and injury totals from the Boston Marathon bombing? My guess is that the average number would be 30-100 times too high for deaths, and 5 to 10 times too high for injuries.

http://news.nationalpost.com/news/world ... ate-tunnel
El Chapo Guzman is a free man today - his second escape from Mexico's ultra high security prisons.
And this interesting bit of news from Vice:Former Mexican Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam told the AP earlier this year that the U.S. would get Guzman in “about 300 or 400 years” after he served time for all his crimes in Mexico.
He dismissed concerns that Guzman could escape a second time. That risk “does not exist,” Murillo Karam said.
Initial reports said that the government halted flights at Toluca International Airport, which is only about 25 miles from the Antiplano prison. But when reached by VICE News, the airport's director of operations said the facility had received no instructions to cancel or delay flights in an effort to prevent Guzman from boarding a plane.
"We never closed the airport and it's been operating as normal," director Miguel Perez said. "Our security is a little raised, but overall, all normal."

Shooting in lower Manhattan this afternoon, a few blocks from my Chinatown office (I'm fine, thanks for asking)
HORROR IN SOHO: Security guard who agreed to work overtime at Manhattan federal building shot dead by deranged gunman who then takes his own life
Funny how not a single headline I've seen mentions anything about the gunman's background.
HORROR IN SOHO: Security guard who agreed to work overtime at Manhattan federal building shot dead by deranged gunman who then takes his own life
Funny how not a single headline I've seen mentions anything about the gunman's background.
(Security guard who was killed,) Idrisa Camara, 53, was shot at point blank range by 68-year-old Kevin Downing, a retired U.S. Army Reserves captain outraged at being fired by the Department of Labor for allegedly blowing the whistle on what he called “disclosing inexcusable public waste.”
After shooting Camara, Downing shot and killed himself, officials said.

Re: The Important Sounds of Things Falling Apart
You had your lock-tight alibi arranged well in advance, no doubt. It would be devastating to lose more of the leadership cadre. Especially when the Homeland Paranoia Department is going to start sweeping the streets -- and more important, coffee shops and craft breweries -- for guys with long beards, plaid shirts, and those big clunky glasses. ISIS-Soho and ISIS-Park Slope are in big trouble.

Is this the right thread for the discussion of the sell off? Could be big. China down 8.4%, U.S. Futures down 700. Was the good doctor right all along?

Re: The Important Sounds of Things Falling Apart
this is not the best thread to discuss the sell off. this is the place to note finance people jumping from high windows, or disgruntled investors shooting up the Edward Jones office.

I was on the phone this morning with a hedge fund manager. He said, "This market makes me want to jump out of a window, like they did in 1929. But, we're only on the second floor, and we're above a deli. So, I might do it at lunchtime."

But the timeline is a bit off. The interview was in October. He was just recaptured a couple days ago.
But still...Sean Penn?

I read about this last weekend and my head nearly exploded.
It's 2016, how the hell can this be going on in a first world country?

And the runaround, the bureaucracy that the people of Flint ran into. Unbelievable.

Water and sewer is serious business that requires large amounts of money and skills. Not surprised at all that a Michigan municipality might not be able to manage it well.
Re: The Important Sounds of Things Falling Apart
the switch wasn't initiated by the town. it was initiated by the unelected emergency manager of flint and carried out by his successor. and the guy who appointed both of them, rick snyder, didn't declare a state of emergency in flint until the justice department announced it had begun an investigation into the whole sordid affair. fuck him.HaulCitgo wrote:Water and sewer is serious business that requires large amounts of money and skills. Yeah, I know the facts seldom prevent people here from talking shit about things they know nothing about, but Flint had been on the Detroit water system, which despite Detroit's financial issues was (and is) one of the best water systems in the country.
