Huh. Kinda like how when the military goes into Middle Eastern countries and fucks things up to prevent terrorism it just creates more terrorists.

That's what dragged me out to the streets. One day a couple of weeks ago the riot-geared cops showed up and just walked through a small protest outside the DA's office. The next day there were ten times as many people out there, including my old fat ass.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

I've read that Customs and Border Protection (my former employer) sent officers in unmarked military-looking gear. Confirmed with a source yesterday that it's true. I jokingly asked if he had any TDY (temporary duty travel) in Portland. He laughed and said not yet, but he is expected to deploy some of his guys in the next round of cities Trump threatened yesterday. He confirmed that CBP sent officers from other ports to Portland. I'm sure there are other agencies sending officers, but that's the only one I know of. Border Patrol sent officers too, but they are under CBP.

So, not only is this Unconstitutional, but incredibly dangerous as the CBP officers are Customs Inspectors. They are trained to search cargo containers or ask you questions about what's in your luggage when your international flight lands. These guys are nowhere near capable of walking the streets and policing, and really not capable of handling riot suppression. Putting them in unmarked vans to kidnap people is so far outside the scope of anything I ever thought possible, but with all the other shit in the last 3.5 years and with COVID, nothing really surprises me anymore.

I hadn't even thought about Blackwater, but I'd be surprised if they weren't involved. Erik Prince is Betsy DeVos' brother, and he was Trump's emissary in illegally meeting with Putin's representative prior to Trump's inauguration (link) , and they are the perfect cover for this type of overreach and quasi-military action against US citizens within the US, and a great way to throw tax dollars into a friend's pocket.

Another disturbing trend is that there is currently no Secretary of DHS or Commissioner of CBP. As Trump said, he likes "Acting" Secretaries and Commissioners, so he doesn't have to vet them through the Senate, and they aren't accountable to Congressional oversight. There are alot of Acting Secretaries and Commissioners, and it's an abuse of power, because Congress is supposed to have a vote and accountability over these posts. But hey, laws, policies, norms and even the fucking Constitution don't apply to this fucker. The Law and Order President who drained the Swamp and is the most transparent President ever, people have never seen anything like it, they tell me I can't believe you are so transparent...

The brownshirts have arrived in baltimore - staging at Camden yards. There’s been no “unrest” here. No federal property threatened or harmed in any way at any point (the bullshit justification used in Portland). A week ago a Columbus statue took a bath in the harbor. Totally something that needs secret police. I am irate.

This is going to backfire, and quickly.

You can do shit out in Portland and most of the east coast media apparatus will sort of blink real hard and not get too worked up. You start fucking around this close to Washington, or start shit in Chicago and this won't stand.

Call someone else's Senator. I feel like Rubio knows what the right thing to do is, and he occasionally gets a pang of guilt, then sits back down like the spineless wimp he is.

I just realized, didn't Trump make fun of Rubio for his inability to drink water at the debates? Yet now it's uncouth to make fun of a politician's inability to drink water.

Emails sent to both Senators and my Rep. Even played to Young's military career asking if this is why he served so the president could run roughshod over the Constitution.

Our rep is a spineless Trump puppet, so I see no purpose (does things like delay his vote when going against the party in the interest of his constituents only after the party's side has gotten enough votes to win).

I did use the word "fascism" in my very succinct emails to Schumer and Gillibrand, though.

There is nothing they want more than a protester to fire a gun. Will be used to justify everything they have and will do.

What are the Portland Police doing while this is happening?

Are they standing back? Guarding things?

Right? Who do you think the cops are?
I asked my father this question, since he spent his entire career as a LEO. His assumption is that they are loving the fact that someone else is absorbing all the criticism. Whether they agree with Trump's deploying the Federal officers or not, all the heat is off them. I'd like to think at least some of the Portland PD officers are pissed that a roving band of unnamed Federal stormtroopers are kidnapping the citizens they protect. I'm sure some are thrilled with the help of outsiders roughing up the protesters they aren't allowed to violently disperse, and others are probably happy for the help and glad they aren't the one in riot gear stuck in a dangerous spot. Most people don't become a cop in a small city like Portland because they are looking for the chance to crack skulls and break up riots.

I met (usually at the opposite side of the table at disciplinary hearings and Union arbitrations) a lot of Customs Inspectors who are aggro Alpha male wannabes who couldn't get hired as police officers, and desperately wanted a uniform, badge and a gun. The guys who volunteer for the specialized SWAT-type teams worry me. Some of them are itching at the chance to dress like a soldier, run through a crowd and smashing Liberals' faces. Not all, hopefully not most, but they are in there for sure. I never did any work with Border Patrol. They fall under CBP, but I was just working with people in NY/NJ, so no Border Patrol work ever came my way. I imagine they have more of an issue with these types of guys, as they are roaming the borders looking for illegals, not standing at a gate in the airport or searching boxes at a seaport.

I would enjoy a city using its police force to defend its citizen protestors, lined up several feet from the federal "police".

You've probably all seen tweets and footage of Portland's mayor getting gassed last night, so I'm not going to dig it up.

Certain I've mentioned a few times I went to J-school with the editorial cartoonist from the Newark Star-Ledger, Drew Sheneman.

His cartoon yesterday really got to the point:

This is by far the oldest T-shirt I own but I'm never getting rid of it, because it's a Sheneman original. Think he might win a Pulitzer Prize one day for editorial cartooning.
