If anyone is cheating and checking in, I wish you all an easy fast.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Easiest fast ever. About to go make a ham sandwich. May the rest of you Jews be written into the Book of Life.

WGN will have an opening for an editor position, specifically the person who chooses the stock images. I thought Jews ran the media?

My town sends color/shape coded name tags for K and 1st graders who take the bus. Before my oldest's first day, we received a yellow star with his name on it. My wife wouldn't let me fake an outraged response. I found it funny, but that is pretty stupid the school didn't think avoid yellow stars.

So please forgive me Tribesmen for asking an ignorant question, here. But, what are the official limitations on your activities on Rosh Hashanah and/or Yom Kippur?

Today is not the day.

Next Friday pm/ Saturday, the 29/30th. Yom Kippur. Tenth day of the seventh month. Then we talk about them.

Same restrictions as on the Sabbath. No work, no electricity, no driving, going to synagogue. Yom Kippur is a full day of prayers, repentance, fasting and introspection.

It is said that on Rosh Hashannah the Book of Life is opened and on Yom Kippur your fate for the year is written and the Book is closed for another year.

Never fear asking a genuine question, especially since there is really no reason you should know. Rosh Hashana is the New Years, and opens the 10 day period of God finalizing the Book of Life, deciding who lives through the year. God is judging whether he lets you live, so do with that what you will. Outside of Orthodox, Jews treat the rules more of a guideline and symbolism rather than strict rules. Then again, I think a huge percentage of Jews are secular, and don't go to services outside of the High Holy Days.

Yom Kippur is the big day. You are supposed to start fasting at sundown, and continue fasting through sundown the following day, broken with a bagel, a schmear and some smoked white fish. The day is filled with hours upon hours of listening to a Cantor sing somberly in an ancient language you can't understand, peppered with the musical stylings of a guy blasting on a rams horn. Good times.

Last night my kids were complaining that they have never been to a Synagogue, so I described a Yom Kippur service, and the 3 days a week of Hebrew school I went to as a kid, and gave them the option of quitting soccer and cross country so they could attend Hebrew School. I don't think they will ask again. My son asked why Jewish holidays sucked so bad, so I explained Ramadan. I don't think they will be joining a Mosque, either.

Depending on how close they are to puberty, they probably wouldn't like Catholicism's stance on brother-emailing either.

You don't blow the shofar until the end of Yom Kippur. You blow it 100 blasts on Rosh Hashannah.

Otherwise, pretty spot on.

Pretty rare to see anyone in a synagogue between 16-30. I went through all that shit as a kid and hated every second.

Agreed, but what I wouldn't give to be standing next to my dad again and talking about stuff while pretending to pray.

Yep.

I remember one Kol Nidre service - looked to my right and my father, great-uncle and grandfather were sitting next to each other and all three were sound asleep.

Prayer for Yom Kippur

To those I have wronged,
I ask forgiveness.
To those I may have helped,
I wish I had done more.
To those I neglected to help,
I ask for understanding.
To those who helped me,
I thank you with all my heart.

I’m by no means religious anymore, but this prayer has nothing to do w gd. Always liked the sentiment behind it.

It really gets to the heart of what it means to be a decent human being.

And nothing specifically to do with any religion.

Yeah - far more Jewish owners than players.

More important today than at any time in my lifetime.

The High Holidays are always a reminder of how I failed to provide my children with a religious education, which I'm still torn about. My daughter was on the phone with my mother while I drove her home for soccer. She mentioned that she didn't have school on Monday (today) because it's "the day that those people can't eat." I said, "you mean us? We are those people."
