Frozen Four

Post by Ryan »

Juggernauts, all.

Quinnipiac
St. Cloud
Yale
UMass Lowell

What are the odds that half the fans would come to Pittsburgh and say "Wow, this place is nice!"?

Didn't Zaz go to St. Cloud State? Apparently Mr. D doesn't have the market cornered on miracle runs in the Big Dance.

Some frozen four trivia: Lowell, MA had the highest unemployment in the nation during the great depression, topping out at 90%. I think its still somewhere in that orbit today. Not a very nice place.

I think you can say that about any of these teams. Yale is the only team that's been here before and that was in the 50s.

My take on most likely to least likely to win it all in Pittsburgh:
1) UMass Lowell
2) St. Cloud St.
3) Quinnipiac
4) Yale

Semifinals:
UMass Lowell vs. Yale
St. Cloud St. vs. Quinnipiac

Don't remember if ZaZ went to St. Cloud, but he has always been a huge fan of their hockey team.

Southern Connecticut bragging rights will be on the line as it's Yale vs. Quinnipiac for the title on Saturday night. Probably the only time that I'll ever get to see my alma mater (Yale) play for a championship in a sport that I care about. We were never good enough to even make the tournament in my 4 years there, but hockey games were always a helluva lot of fun to attend. Q-Pac went 3-0 against Yale this season, by a combined score of 13-3, so I'm not too optimistic about the Final.

North Dakota and Ferris St are heading to double OT over on the U, with the winner going to the Frozen Four.

I don't watch a lot of college hockey, but the guys look really small. Especially FSU.

Whenever I hear anything about Red Berenson, I think of former Los Angeles GM and current Flyer executive consultant Dean Lombardi, and this 2010 story.
During a recent interview, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi explained that Johnson is learning his craft…belatedly.
“This guy has never had any coaching [at the University of Michigan],” Lombardi said. “Jack just did what he wanted.”

“Michigan is the worst.” Lombardi added. “For hockey people, if you’ve got a choice between a kid—all things being equal—one’s going to Michigan and one’s going to Boston University, you all want your player [going to Boston University]. Michigan’s players—[head coach] Red [Berenson] doesn’t coach. It’s ‘do what you want.’ He gets the best players in the country.”

During his two seasons at the University of Michigan, Johnson played as a rover, rather than as a defenseman, even though that was his official position.

“Jack was a thoroughbred out there,” Lombardi explained. “But he was all over the place. He was awful as a hockey player. As an athlete, you’re going, wow! Look at the way he skates, shoots, he can pass. But he had no idea where he was going.”

“At times, he was playing forward at Michigan,” Lombardi elaborated. “You had no idea what position he was playing. But he had always been the star and he always got his numbers. Then he turns pro and for the first time, we’re telling him ‘whoa, just make the first pass and learn to play in your own end.’ How about making a read in your own end about the right guy to pick up? He was awful.”

For those who like college hockey STX is doing a behind the scenes 6 part series on Miami's team. STX didn't this for four of the lacrosse teams they sponsored last year (UNC, Duke, Ohio State, Syracuse).

It was good. Series is called "The Season"

Can someone tell me why Hockey East would have best of three in conference tournament for quarterfinals? Is it just to eliminate flukiness? Does only the top seed get into the tournament? Learn me up, peeps.

I can't really speak to Hockey East, but the Big 10 (old school! and weirdly inaccurate because there are only 7 teams playing hockey!) does roughly the same thing. 1st place goes right to the semi-finals while the other teams duke it out in best of 3 to get to the frozen four.

The NCHC (St. Cloud, Denver, Minn-Duluth, etc.) does the same thing.

I think conferences messed around with having the entire tournament at a neutral site but attendance was universally shitty, so they go with format.

A lot of people have been agitating for the NCAA's to do something similar. Well, not necessarily that similar, but having the top 4 seeds host their pod on home ice. Attendance at the opening round games SUCKS every year and the energy in the respective arenas is really flat.

And to answer your other question, no... Hockey East will typically get at least 2 teams, usually more than that.

https://www.uscho.com/rankings/pairwise ... s/d-i-men/

You can kind of geek out on that site, looking at the folks floating around 15-18. This weekend can make a break a few teams. Penn St, for example, punches a ticket if they beat Notre Dame. North Dakota and Western Michigan probably screwed themselves by not getting out of the first weekend in their conf playoffs.

From all that info, looks like BU would need to at least win against Northeastern to have a shot. Down in the mid-twenties.

Starting that low with only the conference tournaments to go, most likely they're going to need to win the conference tournament. Since all tournament champs make the field, usually gotta be in the top 15 in Pairwise to get an at-large bid.

Yeah, what brian said. That's why I was focusing on the 15-18 slots in Pairwise. Almost impossible to get an at-large in the 20s, because even if all the conference tournaments go chalk, you still don't have enough run to jump that many teams.
