Forgot to mention that Cam Talbot was named the League's #1 star last week. So, he and McDavid have each done that. Now it's Lucic's turn, I guess. Or it might be Talbot again. He stopped 34 out of 35 shots last night. I'm just afraid that he's going to hit a wall. He's played in every game so far.

As for the Oilers diaspora, Taylor Hall is reportedly scoring goals and doing good things in New Jersey. I've seen a few gifs, so I guess it's true.

And in St. Louis, Ken Hitchcock keeps finding ways to compliment Nail Yakupov. So, that's nice to see. He scored a goal against the Oilers in Edmonton last week, and the fans gave him a great ovation.

I feel bad for Pääjärvi. He's a first-rounder who never quite made it. There's no shame in that. But he came into the league the same year as Hall and Eberle, so the Oilers used him as part of a marketing campaign. That's a lot of pressure for somebody who had never played in North America up to that point. He scored 34 points his rookie year, but he hasn't topped 16 points since then.

So back to back 10th overall picks on waivers. Bet that's a new one.

I ain't even mad, bro.

The Oilers were shut out by Ottawa last night. This was Craig Anderson's first game in goal since learning that his wife has cancer. (Also, it was Anderson's second straight shutout, and he was named the league's #1 star.)

Your Edmonton Oilers are now 7-2. McDavid is leading the league in scoring. Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine (and a bunch of others) are leading the league in goals. What a time to be alive.

The Edmonton fans showed a lot of class giving him an ovation, after he beat their team. And, Edmonton goalie Cam Talbot also came out to applaud when Anderson was named first star. Nice.

Watching the Oilers/Islanders game. On a losing streak, injuries piling up, starting to get that sinking feeling. Puljujaarvi and Kassian were hurt in the first period, so the Oilers are playing with 10 forwards.

McDavid is flying around, creating chances, but I just have a bad feeling. Maybe it has to do with that g-dawful arena in Brooklyn. I can't wait until the Islanders move out of there. 3-3, second intermission.

It means nothing in the post-Puckett era, but Talbot always came off as a real good dude.

Mister D, you're going to have to learn to trust again. Open your heart, and love will follow.

Talbot has been great so far, by the way. He's the MVP of the first dozen games.

The Oilers won in a shootout last night. Nice win, after falling behind 2-0 early in the first period. They're back at it in Detroit this afternoon.

Apparently, Puljujarvi's injury (after a cheap knee-on-knee hit by Dennis Seidenberg) isn't serious. He'll probably miss today's game, tho. I'm really enjoying him.

Speaking of Puljujarvi, I've noticed that hockey redditors refer to him as :] in the game threads. I see the resemblance.

Kind of an impressive win yesterday. Fourth game of a road trip, back-end of back-to-backs, playing with their backup goalie, and they won, 2-1. Detroit did a good job of clogging the middle of the ice, and the game was kind of dull. But I'll take dull if it means winning.

McClellan was double-shifting McDavid a lot to get him more favorable match-ups. Don't see that in today's NHL very often.

Before yesterday, Jimmy Howard had won 13 straight against Edmonton, dating back to 2009.

The Oilers are in town to play the Penguins tomorrow night. I won't be there because I'll be plugged in watching election stuff. I have bad luck when it comes to watching the Oilers in Pittsburgh. Last year, I was going to go, but McDavid got hurt a week or two before the game. I did meet-up with Sabo that day, tho, so it wasn't a total loss. (That reminds me: we're fast approaching Chamillionaire's birthday!)

I was rather pissed about McDavid's injury. The whole reason I wanted to go to that Pens game was to watch him play. But yes, it's always great to hang out with bapo and drink beer and talk wrestling and musicians I've never heard of.

Well, you did witness one of the best goals of the year -- that Malkin take-away at the blue line/spinorama thing. That was majestic.

Edmonton won on Saturday, ending a 5-game losing streak. Rooting for a team at this level is hard, because every game matters, and every losing streak steals a little bit of my soul.

First place in their division. It feels good, man. Feels real good.

Connor McDavid scored his first career hat-trick. Rejoice!

Fluky 1st goal, "garbage area" 2nd, and sniper's 3rd. It's almost like you can see the confidence growing, (and his grip on the stick loosening) with each goal.

Ha. He can be pretty. This clip shows his 3 assists vs. the Pens a couple of weeks ago. The second one is beautiful. The Penguins defenseman is in good position, but McDavid just skates right around him, untouched.

He did that kind of thing in juniors a lot, but I didn't think that he would be able to do it to NHL defensemen. He's so good at so many things, and on top of that, he's one of the best skaters in the league. It's almost unfair.

I thought that this thread had suddenly turned into Grindr.

So, I had something between a realization and an existential crisis. Closer to a realization.

The Oilers are good this year. They've added a decent defenseman in Adam Larrson. Puljujarvi is very good, but he's still an 18-year-old rookie. Hall-to-Lucic is a downgrade, but they have more GRIT now. Beyond that, the only major differences this year are 1) Cam Talbot has been excellent in goal, whereas last year he wasn't very good until the second half of the season, and 2) McDavid is healthy and a year older.

I really think that something special is starting to happen. An insanely hyped kid is coming into the league and looks to be as good as advertised. He might be LeBron James and Sidney Crosby. But he plays on a west-coast team (and a Canadian one) that's never on tv, playing in an era when scoring is down, while the larger sports world just doesn't care about hockey. This bothers me. I love hockey, and I want more people to be exposed to it when it's good, because there's nothing better than good hockey. But this seems to be happening in a vacuum.

This all goes back to my refusal to accept that hockey is a niche sport. I just need to find a way to blame Bettman for everything and move on.

The Flames are 6-3-1 through their last ten, and the oilers are 3-6-1.... There is balance in the force.

bapo: i liked your rant above. Up here it's all McDavid and Matthews that lead the sportscasts, every night. In America, the NHL doesn't take risks so it's going to be niche forever. Edmonton? forget it. The last two Stanley Cup finalists Tampa and San Jose can't even get into the news cycle. The American NHL only has 8 teams.

Fiery McDavid tonight against Philly. You'll recall he was injured last year on a hit by the Flyers' Brandon Manning. Now, apparently Manning is admitting he was out to hurt McDavid, and of course McDavid is pissed.
Think back to last year for a second, when McDavid first took the NHL by storm. At 18 years old, he was cruising along as an NHL rookie, scoring five goals and 12 points in his first 12 games.

Then, in his 13th game, his rookie season was derailed before it could really take off.

Using his patented speed to beat the Flyers defencemen on the rush, McDavid was checked by Brandon Manning and crashed hard into the boards. McDavid came up clutching his shoulder area and sat on the bench for the rest of the period. He didn’t return to that game and was forced out of action until February with a fractured clavicle.
After the game, the usually close-to-the-chest McDavid sounded off on Manning, which really explained what was going on between the two during the wild 6-5 Oilers loss.

"You know what, I did all I could defending him last year in the media," McDavid said. "Everyone wanted to make a big deal saying he did it on purpose. And he wanted to say some comments today about what went on last year and I thought it was one of the most classless things I’ve ever seen on the ice.

"He said some things and our guys responded accordingly. And I guess we can put the whole if he did it on purpose thing to rest because what he said out there kinda confirmed that. Shows what kind of guy he is when he doesn’t step up and fight some of our guys."...

Hmm. Well, this is certainly an interesting turn of events. I didn't see the game tonight, but I followed some of the chatter on-line, and I read that McDavid was much more vocal than he usually is, shit-talking Manning at every opportunity. I thought that was odd, but I guess this explains it. (Too bad the Oilers back-up goalie played like a back-up goalie. Would have been nice to get a win.)

Kind of a noisy week for McDavid. He made headlines a few days ago for criticizing the NHL's concussion protocol. He was taken out of a game after getting knocked down, but not injured. He was upset because he missed a 5-on-3 power play, but he shouldn't have complained about concussion safety. There's a learning curve for everybody here.

Still, a fired-up, trash-talking McDavid is going to be something to see.

McDavid still leads the league in scoring. He has 9 more points than Crosby and Kucherov. (Crosby has played 8 fewer games.)

The Oiler fans on twitter are saying that Taylor Hall asked for this with a dirty elbow to the face of noted knuckle-dragging thug Zack Kassian. I have not been able to find any video evidence of it yet. But, here is the subsequent reaction:

At first I thought Kassian was clutching him and Hall was just trying to break away and play (sort of pushing him to free up).
Hall covering up looked really bad. If you don't want to drop gloves..fine but that just looked really terrible
Went to the box score, Hall got a double minor and Kassian got 2. Refs may have missed it initially but seems like they got the calls.

I'll never understand why people are against refs in any sport going to video on plays like that. (1) It assures the offender is punished and (2) it discourages future sneaky moves if its not just a matter of making sure the officials aren't looking.

Ugh. I hate this shit. Hall and Kassian both look very bad here.

My love of Hall is well documented, but I can't defend that elbow. Everybody gave him the benefit of the doubt for that hit a month ago, but there's no excuse for this. At least he seemed angry at himself after the game.

I've softened a lot on Kassian, by the way. Didn't like him in juniors or early in his career, but I don't mind him now. (I have a soft spot for recovering alcoholics/addicts.) Last night notwithstanding, he's not the goon he used to be. But, considering how I was never able to sway you on Matt Cooke, I know that we're going to disagree about this, sancarlos.

In other news, the Oilers sent Puljujaarvi down to the AHL a few days ago. :[ He started the season strong, but he was getting fewer and fewer minutes as the season wore on. This is no big deal. Very few 18-year-olds belong in the NHL. He's going to be fine.

To replace him, the Oilers recalled Anton Slepyshev. Slepyshev's name is an anagram of ENSLAVE PYTHONS.

Here's a fun story in Vice Sports Canada. The writer interviewed three former OHL goalies about playing against McDavid in juniors. They seem happy to have gotten the chance to play against him, even tho he embarrassed them on the ice, and their worst moments are now on YouTube.

The Oilers went on a nice run to close out the unofficial first half of the season, going 7-0-1. Last night, they beat the dreaded San Jose Sharks, so Edmonton and San Jose are tied atop their division. (San Jose has one more game in hand.) More importantly, Edmonton is now 12 points clear of the final playoff spot.

McDavid still leads the league in scoring, despite the Penguins' recent habit of scoring 7 goals per game. I expect Crosby and/or Malkin to catch him at some point, but it hasn't happened yet.

Okay, NHL, now you just need to get these guys on television. (The All Star Game doesn't count.)

Go ahead and trash-talk, but I'm still more concerned with 9th place than 1st place. And Edmonton is still 10 points clear of 9th place. I'm starting to look forward to the playoffs a little bit. (Where I expect Edmonton to get smoked in the first round, a la Pittsburgh/Ottawa in 2007.)

McDavid is still leading the league in scoring, and Crosby is still right there behind him.
