Eh, it's more of a vague feeling, like, 'Wouldn't the league be more interesting if this team were suddenly good again?' I'm a Leafs fan the way that I'm a Knicks or Orioles fan.
But I am a fan of this particular Leafs team. I'm drawn to any team with a lot of young talent, especially if I've watched those players in juniors (Matthews, Marner, Nazem Kadri, Connor Brown).
Matthews has three goals already tonight. Hockey is easy. Comedy is hard.
So, unless McDavid scores 5 goals tonight, he's going to be a disappointment, right? Thanks, Auston Matthews, for setting the bar too high for everybody else.
Agree on the Gaudreau mugging/McDavid penalty shot. But McDavid was creating so many chances all night, so I don't mind if he might have been gifted a cheap one. And 7-4? Is it 1985 again?
So, this extends the season. The Oilers have not been eliminated from playoff contention. I can still enjoy this.
And last night's win proves that Edmonton is the greatest city in Alberta. Suck it, Medicine Hat.
The Oilers had a CBA-mandated day off today, but they're practicing anyway. They were blown out by Buffalo last night, and McLellan wanted the team to practice today. Since it was a scheduled day off, the team had to vote on it. On-line reaction ranges from 'Great leadership' to 'This would have never happened if they didn't have a 19-year-old Captain' to 'Why the fuck does Pouliot keep taking dumb offensive-zone penalties like what the fuck Pouliot what's your fucking problem?'
Three games in, and there's already a little drama. We'll see how they respond tomorrow night against Carolina.
The Oilers are 2-1, and McDavid was named the League's first star.

Only Edmonton would panic after one loss. Losers.
Kung Fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene..
How do you know when there are too many outdoor games? When an October game in Winnipeg is delayed 2 hours because of the sun. (Also, how many of you were even aware that there was an outdoor game today?) But, whatevs. The good guys won, 3-0.
Your hometown Edmonton Oilers are now 5-1. Please don't wake me. Let me enjoy this dream for a little while longer.

That's NHL networks fault for absolute crap marketing. Rogers Sportsnet up here promoted the shit out of it. Even the alumni game yesterday.
The TV appeal is pretty much gone. These events are for the host cities, teams, and fans now. Every city should get to host one for their fans.

Yeah, I wouldn't have known about it if I didn't follow one of the teams involved. (I don't get NHL Network on my cable package, and I watch very little NHL programming.)
But if it's turning into a local event, that's fine, I guess. From what I gather, the alumni game was fun, for people who enjoy that type of thing. Let Winnipeg have something nice. But the NHL has certainly killed off the novelty.

Is the Heritage Classic any more special than the Winter Classic or Random Game in February Between Two Non-Conference Teams Classic? Yeah, it was in 2003, but I doubt that it is now.

It's just the Canadian version.

Yeah, I know. I'm sure that it's marketed more up there because of that, but they all kind of blend together.
Also, Toronto is hosting something called The Centennial Classic on New Year's Day. The Winter Classic will be the following day.
They definitely don't blend together because the NHL doesn't market the Heritage Classic. Whereas the Winter Classic is probably the largest event of the NHL calendar. Bettman wasn't even in Winnipeg today.

Oh, I know that the Winter Classic is a much bigger deal to the League. But I'm talking about all of the outdoor games, including the Stadium Series. There were six outdoor games in 2014. If they want the Winter Classic to be a big deal, they can't have five more games just like it.

30 NHL teams. This year 4 outdoor games. Winter Classic still a draw on TV and ticket sales in those markets make it profitable...not sure they have hit saturation yet. Lots of markets would host a gimmick game if they could charge a premium and sell out.
