Game of Thrones....

Post by DaveInSeattle »

There must be a few other GoT watchers out there. What was the reaction to the first episode last night? Mine:

1-The scene with Tyrion and Tywan was brutal.

2-Joffrey is still the sniveling simp. Lady Margery is the "Princess Diana" type.

3-I would watch a spin-off starring the Pirate dude. "You've drank at 4 of my weddings!"

4-So a dragon can swoop in the water, catch a fish, cook it with its breath, and then eat it? Seaworld would love that act.

I still haven't seen season 2. Book three is my favorite so far, so this season has the potential to be off the charts great.

Tyrion is serially under-appreciated. His righteous betrayal of his family will be a joyous thing to watch.(no, I have not read the books, so no spoiler, just anticipation)

I can't wait until someone sticks a sword through Joffrey's head.

Right now, I think John Snow's storyline might have the most potential for stealing the show.

Overall I thought it was just an OK episode, serving primarily as a refresher of where things stood at the end of the last season and a set-up for the new season's plotlines.
AussieDave wrote: 1-The scene with Tyrion and Tywan was brutal.
Yes. Highlight of the episode by far. Charles Dance is a fucking fantastic actor. Few can communicate as much with words as he can with silence. The scene with him and the youngest Stark daughter at the fort last year was probably the best in the series.

Absolutely fascinated by it all. Andy Greenwald does an excellent write up after every episode and he nails it. I read the first book and intended to read the 2nd, but school and stuff got in the way. Only 5 of the 7 books have been released in the series, so despite the fact that season 3 on TV is only the first half of the 3rd book, the series itself is far from done. Hopefully that means, despite the astronomical budget, it'll be around another 5 seasons.

My first question was who was the beheaded guy that Tarly came upon? I forgot that storyline.

I'm constantly rooting for Tyrion, Arya (who we didn't see this episode), & Jon Snow. I know, shocking, right? Jon Snow changing clothes because of Ygritte (and because who the fuck wants to live for the North Watch) is intriguing. Tyrion getting dressed down by Tywin, I agree, was gut wrenching. That dude is going to come back and serious destroy some mother fuckers. It just has to happen.

Cersei is still a bitch. You see the face she made at Lady Margery at the dinner table? Just cold. Daenerys has finally matured to a point where I don't see her as annoying anymore. I was getting tired of her "I'M THE MOTHER OF DRAGONS!!!" routine. Well, now she really is the mother of dragons. Finally. Her toplessness was making it allowable, but that has happened in a minute. So I'm glad we've diverted. The final scene in the episode with Barristan Selmy killing the scorpion thing was excellent. He, Ser Joran, & Khaleesi are going to make one ridiculous triumvirate. Plus she's going to lead the unic, nippleless army dudes? Ruh Roh.

Another character that wasn't in the episode was the Kingslayer himself, Jaime Lannister. I completely forgot where he is with all of this. Was he still with that ridiculously tall female giving her shit? I'm a fan of his storyline too.

Sansa is a little snob, but I think that's the point. Her scene with Littlefinger was quite good. Aiden Gillen has found a nice post-Carcetti role. Then there are the whores we love so dearly, Shae & Ros. If it weren't for his hottie nurse wife, the entire Rob Stark angle bores me. Especially his mom. Total "blah" moments when she's on the screen. As is the Stannis Baratheon/Melisandre/Davos stuff. I hope both of those get altered soon.

Who else am I missing? Joffrey? That little incest child is going to get his. It'll happen and I can't wait.

Can't wait til I can catch up with Game of Thrones. My nephew calls it soft porn with some vague plot built around it. I'm guessing that they hired a 13 year old boy as a consultant to figure out what males 25-35 want to see most.

I am currently reading book 5. Book 3 was definitely the most action packed...some unexpected shit is about to go down.

The giants north of the wall were pretty insane in this weeks episode, can't wait to see them in action. I also enjoyed Tyrion's scenes with Tywin and Bronn. FWIW, Stannis, Davos and Mel don't really play a big part until the last quarter of the book. It also seems like they accelerated a lot of Danerys' story, they are cutting straight to the good parts.

without giving anything away, Book 3 was nearly nonstop "holyfuck!" territory. i didn't know this season would only address 1/2 the book, damn.

and as for the softporn angle, the books are at times completely overwrought with unnecessary sex so it's just reflecting the original story. not that i have a problem with it.

I enjoyed the episode, though I must confess that I have trouble following some of the characters at times... A lot of the old dudes look the same to me.

And I think I need to read recaps just so I can get the names stuck in my head. A great example is that City Watch guy that shows up at the end with dragon lady. I totally missed who he was at first.

She realizes that Joffrey is such a raging asshole that the only way someone doesn't kill him is if she steps up and proves to be a hero of the people. The way he sneered at her out of his little crate as she was coming out of the orphanage was perfect for that character.

I love Ciarán Hinds playing the King Beyond the Wall. He was fantastic as Caesar in Rome.

With the popularity of the series, I assume they are going to split up the next two books into two seasons as well, so I would say 5 seasons before we get to Book 6, with two more years before Book 7. "Maybe" that will give Martin time to finish out Books 6 and 7. He does not turn them out rapidly.

I dont think Book 4 has enough material for two seasons. It was very slow and uneventful.

good point; i just finished book 4 last night. definitely a "transitional" book.

i'm going to hold off a few years i think before i read 5, i'll wait until the series catches up. those books aren't easy to read, too long by 1/3 at least.

I have not read book 5 yet (it's sitting downstairs waiting), but I understand it pretty much takes place concurrently with book 4, and we find out what everyone left out of FoC was up to. So while FoC could maybe be one season, I wonder if they'll combine it with aDwD and get two (or three?) seasons out of the two books.

They need to slow down the seasons somehow. GRRM is involved pretty heavily in the show from what I've read, so with the amount of time he takes to write each book they need to slooooow the pace down so that they can have closure. (Unless of course they take some time off between say seasons six and seven to let characters age, etc.)

HBO GO should have both seasons and S3 E1. If you subscribe to HBO you should have access to it.

Does this website have a 'share drive' option where we can upload stuff to it and everyone can download from it? I have so many shows downloaded I feel I could just share them with everyone.

I'd say DropBox would be an option, but unless everyone is paying for the large capacity, it would fill up too quick.

I have hard copies of all the books. There is no way I'm keeping them until the kids are old enough to read them. They have as much porn as the LOTR does singing. I think HBO actually leaves a lot of it out.

I think i may try the first book. But I'll probably just pick it up instead of ruining your set in case I decide I don't want to get into another Wheel of Time.

I'm 5 episodes into S1 now, and damn this show is awesome. My local friends are dicks for not recommending this, and I'm a dick for not listening here.

Love the chars ( especially Tyrion, Arya, and Catelyn) and story so far. At least those chars I don't hate with a seething passion (Joffrey)

Episode 6 and maybe 7 are later tonight.

Z, gold does melt very quickly. It doesnt have an inordinantly high melting point, and conducts heat really well. It's one of the reasons it was such a nice thing for people in ancient times to smelt and cast into things like jewelry as they didn't need really technologically advanced equipment to do it.

Because it conducts heat so well, it will all get to its melting point temperature at almost the same time too, so once it starts melting it goes very quickly.

Yeah, well, it isn't going to get better on that front any time soon. Or ever.

I think this is why it is taking George RR Martin so long to come out with more books. I don't think I'm being spoiler-y, but the story expands a ton in the last couple of volumes, with new characters, storylines, and locations. It's like an ever-expanding universe. I think it will take another 5 books to bring everything back together.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

I've read that the A Song of Fire and Ice series is only 7 books. 5 have been released. So that should be interesting. It also makes me wonder just how long HBO will spend the money for the seasons when they are so expensive.

Episode 2 was excellent. You know an episode is great when it flows seemlessly and when it ends you're mad because it seemed so sudden. I could easily gush about every scene and character. It was one of the better ones of the series, in my opinion.

I liked the scene with Sansa talking to Margaery and her grandmother. They seemed to frame Sansa to show how alone and vulnerable she is. The grandmother should be an interesting character too.

I wanted to see Brienne kick the Kingslayer's ass a little more before it was broken up.

And who has Theon?

So much good stuff in this episode.

I wasn't sure if Theon's men turned him over to Snow or whether they were doing this to him as some sort of revenge, but that wouldn't make sense. Thanks for clearing that up, Keg. Between the knife under the fingernail and the corkscrew into his foot, I don't know which would be worse.
