“I worried about his mental health if he didn’t get back to surfing,” said his wife, Nicole. “He always has said he’ll be a woodworker when he can’t surf anymore, but he’s never made anything for me out of wood.”
Loved this quote.

The guy seems to have a hard time working out his feelings on why he wants the big waves. But, it seems obvious that he is simply an adrenaline junkie.

If you've never seen it, the movie "Step Into Liquid", which has a section about Mavericks, is amazingly awesome.

So does "Riding Giants", which is very awesome in its own right.
Birds don’t suck. They lack the necessary anatomical structures to do so.

The sea was angry today...like an old man trying to return soup at a deli.

They had some great pics in the paper today. They’ve already postponed three tentative dates. Maybe this week...

(Only a 30 minute drive from here. One of these times, I’m going to go watch.)

Not Mavericks but they actually got the Eddie Aikau in this year.
wikipedia wrote: Due to a precondition that open-ocean swells reach a minimum of 20 feet (this translates to a wave face height of over 30 feetThe first Eddie was held at Sunset Beach in 1985;[15] in 1987 Eddie Aikau's younger brother Clyde Aikau won the Eddie after it moved to Waimea Bay), The most recent tournament was in January 2023, when waves in the bay reached 30 to 50 feet (15 m) high. The contest invites only 28 big-wave riders to participate in two rounds of competition. The event does not allow the use of jet skis to tow surfers into the waves.

They're just just reenacting what the previous guys did in 8 different ways, to be honest.
