I agree with your points, and I shared my opinion upthread. I hate the idea of schools dealing with criminal acts and accusations. Not equipped. Also upthread, I took the opportunity to read Title IX, and my little mind was blown. I had no idea how far reaching it was, I thought it was to let girls/women play sports.
Who knows? Maybe, you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away and held for ransom.

But the problem is that the criminal justice system is not equipped to deal with whether certain conduct should be grounds for expulsion from a college.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

As long as SOMEONE does the fucking due diligence I don't care if it's the college or the police. Far too often no one does.

Yeah, the Title IX investigation process on college campuses can be improved but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Frankly, something needs to be done to get rapists and sexual predators off of college campuses and for a litany of reasons -- some understandable and some less so -- the police aren't getting it done.

So $2m was enough to keep quiet about all of that? But $1.5m wasn't? That's just weird to me.

Oh it's totally fucked up even from her standpoint. She has admitted she didn't care for the way she acted at least. She's not absolved, I reckon she knows that, but she's at least got a conscience about it, maybe?

And she's set her conscience's value at somewhere between $1.5 and $2 million. She should be an actuary.

Yup. I don't like it either, but when you realize you've fucked up there is at least something good about owning up to it and not taking the hush money. Again, I want the victims to be treated fairly for the first time in all this, and maybe this is a step towards that. If there are situations where there weren't rapes, then I hope those accused get their justice, too.

Completely apples and oranges, but I really dig the fact that settlement negotiations are inadmissable in Florida courts.

Or enough to remain complicit versus getting onto the right-er side of history.

BTW, I want to say that I'm not discounting her stories because of this or somehow equating her actions with those of the university, football program, or rapists. I just found that aspect very odd.

Did she say she asked for $2 mil? Or did the school say that. Cuz the school's credibility is pretty shot.

At what point do the religious leaders that presumably help steer that fine Baptist college step in and decide that it is time to do the Christian thing?

The fact that this is a college run by a church makes it even more sickening than what happened at Penn State.

And the symbolism is just too rich - Texas! Football! Striving to build national collegiate sports powerhouse!

In the 15th most populous county in the country, but yeah -- it's still pretty crazy. Would be curious to know if that is more or less than other similar-sized counties. Probably sadly more since until the last few years most of Detroit wasn't even really protected by police.

Baylor "Infiltrated" Sexual Assault Survivor Groups

Ketchum was the PR firm hired by Baylor in the wake of the revelations.
When these groups organized on campus to comfort each other and demand action from former chancellor Kenneth Starr, "[Burchett] would coordinate with them, befriend them, and pretend he was helping them organize vigils and demonstrations [about] sexual assault," the source added.

Burchett would pass on what he learned to school officials, the communications department, and Ketchum, the source added. In an email described to PRWeek, Kevin Jackson, VP of student life and Burchett’s supervisor, said the director of student activities was "adept at this kind of thing."

There was a big buzzfeed article day that said same things happened with support groups for an orphanage that had some bad shit happen. I read it at lunch and was sick to my stomach. I still am not good at linking from phone but it was disturbing. Religion has some really bad shit but the Catholic Church is an evil thing.

Well, that was quite a read. I hadn't ever really gathered the entire picture before.

What's insane is that it really comes off like they recruited these guys with promises of white, naive women aplenty.

Pretty fucking disgusting.

Southern Miss administration, head coach at odds over decision to not hire Art Briles
Southern Miss has decided that it’s not worth taking a chance on former Baylor football coach Art Briles.

USM put out a statement Wednesday morning saying that Briles has been informed that he is not a candidate to join the staff.

Briles interviewed with USM head coach Jay Hopson in Hattiesburg on Monday morning for a chance to become the team’s offensive coordinator.

Hopson released a statement Wednesday that says that it was the decision of USM president Rodney Bennett to not hire Briles, who was fired by Baylor in 2016 amid a probe into allegations of sexual assault by his players.
The statement put out by the head coach is bonkers.

The layer of outrageousness underlying it all is that it is a proudly religious institution. For part of the article I got the feeling that underage drinking was seen as a bigger issue on campus.

It's much much worse than that... Basically a bunch of young woman who have almost zero experience navigating sexual situations are dropped into a college setting where until this scandal broke, the Title 9 department wasn't even allowed to talk about sexual interactions (because Baylor's code of ethics prohibits pre-marital sex). It's insane.

And I think the article moves too quickly through the Baylor Bruins recruiting escort service. Sure looks like the university sanctioned a program where college girls had sex with recruits.. And a number of those young women got pregnant and because of the stigma at a place like Baylor, they just left school. They shut the program down when the new Title 9 person came on board and started asking questions.

Gross.

What is really sickening about these coaches is that they are cynically using the "redemption story" as a way to bring these shitbirds* to these campuses.

* - These are young men that need a lot of help, but they shouldn't be airdropped into an environment that is so easily exploited by predatory behavior. I'm not ignoring their terrible behavior, but I also recognize that people that know better are being really reckless here.

Not sure if this is the right thread for this...but ready to be fucking outraged? (I know this case has been discussed here, but I couldn't find the thread)

Police Officer Shared Nude Photos of Student Before She Was Murdered, Lawsuit Says
A campus police officer in whom a college student confided that she feared for her life after a recent breakup shared nude photographs that she had given him with officers not involved in the matter just weeks before she was murdered, her parents contend in a new lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed on Monday in state court in Salt Lake County by the parents of Lauren McCluskey against the University of Utah, where Ms. McCluskey was a college senior when she was killed in October 2018 by a man she had dated for just a few weeks. The suit came a year after Ms. McCluskey’s family sued the university in federal court, where settlement negotiations have reached an impasse.

That is just so fucked up.

The former Utah Supreme Court justice I clerked for has been representing the McCluskeys. We also have a somewhat analogous "failure to protect" case going against Utah State University. That case doesn't involve the nude photo angle though.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Despite being an online and remote graduate student, I had to complete an hour long course on sexual harassment/assault/intervention to comply with BU's policies for all students. It was a very good course that I think is a good step towards making people aware of the seriousness of sexual misconduct. Obviously I'm in a bit different situation than a 18 year old freshman, but I think making the students be aware of the schools policies as well as situations that could be problematic is a positive thing.
