There is no good reason in this day and age for a true comedic movie to last more than 120 minutes.

I think Apatow made a movie based on Pete Davidson’s life so that for once it would actually be believable when his awkward, pot-loving male protagonist wound up with a woman way out of his league.

I was so torn. I liked it and hated it at the same time. I just couldn't relate to any character and didn't like any of them. I hated every decision Sandler's character made, yet there was something about how the movie was made that I liked. Can't explain it.

When I was ring shopping, I had a coworker introduce me to the world of the Diamond District in NYC. The scenes in his shop were sooooo realistic. It's pure chaos, people screaming at each other in Hebrew, 100s of millions of dollars of jewelry in the seediest looking stores that haven't been painted since the 1950s. But the deals, my friend! Same coworker took me to Chinatown's equivalent. Equally scummy, equal amount of yelling from employees, but you cut out the middleman and are basically paying wholesale.

Drew Magary watched 'Gone With The Wind', so you don't have to...

The Gentlemanly Hater’s Guide to Gone With the Wind
Until this week, I had never seen Gone With the Wind. That neglect was one of the very few things keeping me feeling young at age 43. But then HBO temporarily pulled the movie from its streaming service last week to add an introduction that would provide vital context to a movie that is widely beloved but is also super racist. Well, of course, our finest Applebee-American citizens weren’t pleased to see the film get temporarily shelved by literally one streaming service among many, many others that have left it untouched. So they burned their Covid masks, strapped on their bandoliers, and made Victor Fleming’s 1940 Best Picture–winner the number one movie on Amazon in retaliation. Because these people must always be staging the least worthy protest they can possibly conceive of. #DeadRacistLivesMatter.

That's an excellent piece. (And, despite its racism, somehow still an entertaining movie.)

Weird. I once did an installation/consulting gig at the Fairbanks News-Miner. One of the paper's claims to fame is that all north-bound railroad traffic in North America ends at the newspaper. The railroad literally ends at the newspaper and there are no other tracks north at the same latitude in Canada.

Once upon a time at least that was how they could be certain of delivery of newspaper and ink even in winter. (Most papers store only a month or so of either, the News-Miner building has a storage area as large as the rest of the newspaper to make sure they could maintain a store of it.)

For all I know it's still in use.

It's a great movie in my opinion, but obviously problematic in a lot of respects. I think most intelligent people can separate the virtuoso filmmaking from the goofy script from the Confederate retconning.

I haven't intentionally not watched it, but it just never was interesting enough to me to justify watching a four-hour movie. If anything, I'm more interested in it now, just to better understand how it may have affected generations of people's views of the Confederacy.

Yeah, for what it's worth I wasn't talking about you, just people in general. I was a little dismayed that HBO Max took it down. I get wanting to include an introduction that has a reflective historical perspective. A movie like Birth Of A Nation or Triumph Of The Will shouldn't just be available on Amazon Prime without any kind of context as to the system(s) that produced them nor arguably should Gone With The Wind, but I felt like it could have been left up for a few weeks while that was done considering it's still (adjusted for inflation) the highest-grossing movie in the history of the Republic.

Watched 7500 on the Amazon Prime last night. Okay for a straight to Prime movie. Gordon-Levitt does a decent job. Better the Amazon balloon movie but would not pay for it.

Hated that movie.

Mind you, I avoid horror in any case, but that movie was just so grotesque with with central plot points that were so grisly that it actually offended me.

Man, SotL is a great movie. Yes, it's kind of scary, but it's so, so good. I guess maybe the characters are sexist - or at least the FBI guy - but they are pretty explicit about how he's using Jodie Foster as essentially bait. I'm not sure that means the movie is sexist. I mean, the main hero is a woman.

It’s a great movie and it is sexist in a way but I think Clarice is in on it. She knows she’s been used but goes along to further her career. So it’s also empowering in a way.
