Seeing the Roger Ebert thread made me go look for a movies thread. Couldn't find one, so I'm starting this one. Hopefully not a duplicate.

One of my favorite authors is Bill Bryson. Especially his humorous travel books. Today I read that Robert Redford is making a movie of one of his best, A Walk in the Woods, with Redford playing Bryson, and Nick Nolte playing his goofball friend, Katz. Could be good.

Watched Django Unchained last weekend. Loved it. Probably my favorite non Pulp Fiction Tarantino.

And I usually don't care much for oscar snubs because there are a lot of good performances in any given year, but the fact that DiCaprio didn't get even so much as a nomination was rubbish. Waltz was great, but DiCaprio was, IMO, better.

I love Bryson's stuff. I finished AWITW in March, great read as usual (the one about Australia is still my favorite one though). Looking forward to that (Bryson will be quite pleased to be played by Redford).

I have a hard time choosing a favorite between the two. AWITW was more of a story, and I was shocked at what a treasure the Appalachian Trail is. Although I have heard of it and grew up about 2 hours away from a portion of it, I knew next to nothing about it, and would guess that few Americans do. As for In a Sunburned Country, it shouldn't have been nearly as entertaining, but I was fascinated by the bizarre random facts about shithole towns in Australia that there is no reason for anyone to go to, and yet Bryson makes them fascinating for some of the strangest reasons. The guy has an amazing ability to find the most boring and trivial shit interesting and pass it along to the reader. Or at least to me, and based on his popularity, a lot of other people. I wouldn't be surprised if most people find his books, particularly Sunburned to be extremely boring.

I made a donation to the Veronica Mars kickstarter, and I'm not ashamed*. I can't wait for my t-shirt. Just got an email from them, and they made enough cash to shoot in LA. Suck it Vancouver. USA! USA!

Summer movies everyone is most looking forward to? In order, for me, I think it's:

Star Trek Into Darkness (really going to have a hard time avoiding spoilers for this one in the next couple of weeks)
Man Of Steel
The World's End
Pacific Rim
Iron Man 3
Monster's U (Boo? Kitty! = Dusty every time. If I have to see a kid's movie, make mine Pixar. Even if it's a sequel.)
This Is The End (just because I plan on getting both myself and my wife drunk for that one and taking advantage of living within walking distance of a theater)

*anyone else? Bensell? C'mon man, at least tell me you're excited for the movie.

Oh man. Can we be honest here?

I think I was disappointed by The Hobbit.

I watched Django a few weeks ago....and I don't know.....it was good, but I was mildly disappointed. It really needed to be about 20 minutes shorter. I felt the same way about Inglorious Basterds as well.

And holy crap....what was the point of having QT and those other 2 guys as the Australians? Made zero sense at all, and QT's accent didn't sound Aussie in the least.

That said, the acting was great. DiCaprio, Waltz, Foxx were all fantastic. And wow....Sam Jackson was creepy as shit.

I think making it three movies will end up hurting it in the long run. But as with Star Wars, I love them all pretty much no matter.

Watched Life of Pi on Friday. Really well done. I was worried they might have trouble with the first part of the book explaining Pi's religious tendencies. However, they did it very well I thought.

I think I liked this movie and Django better than Argo.

Are there 4D movie theaters in 'MURICA? They are the norm over here. 18,000 WON ($16.50) to sit in a seat that moves, shakes, vibrates, pokes your back and legs, all while getting bursts of air and mist shot at you. Plus the movie is in 3D.

Iron Man 3 was better because of it.

That's cute. I think the answer is no if this write up from last summer is any indicator.

Damn shame. America's behind the times.

There's a new theater opening by our house that advertises rumble seats. Wonder if that's the same thing.

Yeah, I can find a lot of better uses for 18,000 WON

Does anyone else remember Sensaround? I think earthquake and Midway were the only movies that used it.

And Rollercoaster, if I recall. Know that only because it was the first movie I saw at a brand new theater that opened in the backwater Nova Scotia town in which I grew up.

Maybe The Towering Inferno?

I went to one of these back in the 80's at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. Phineas T. Flagg's Sensorium. It smelled awful in there and really creeped me out.

I went and saw the new Star Trek tonight. I liked it. I really like Simon Pegg as Scotty, and the guy playing Spock is pretty good.

And my god....Alice Eve is absolutely incredible. Her role is fairly unnecessary, but wowza....

Actual shot from the movie:

Saw Star Trek 2 in glorious 3D, and it was decent. 7 degens out of 10. I took away 2 for ridiculous plot holes, and 1 for cheeziness. Then I added 1 for Zoe Saldana, but took 2 away because of someone bringing a small child into the theatre who kept going up and down the stairs. Then I added 1 for Scotty's awesome loungewear at the bar. So - seven.

Spiderman not really challenging himself with the level of competition...but not too bad for a Brit (Spiderman 2 is filming and Andrew Garfield decided to hoop it up with some kids while waiting to shoot).

Spoliers in here, but funny.

They really did nail the casting, though. And Simon Pegg is the best.

this could probably also go in confessions - i am quite sure i have never watched an entire episode of Star Trek - neither the original nor any next generation, spin off, etc - nor any of the movies. ever.

not a judgment call on my part, just fact.

and i'm a bit of a nerd. i thought.

I've never watched the TV shows, but I have enjoyed pretty much all of the movies.

Looper is outstanding, one of the best high-concept sci-fi movies in a while. Prometheus is uneven, but still worth a watch if you liked the Alien movies.

Same. Until the movie a few years ago, I never saw anything for Star Trek. Didn't get the famous lines. And didn't know the characters outside of Spock and Kirk.

Also goes for Battlestar and every other everything on the Sci-Fi (SyFy, whatever) channel. And I'd consider myself nerdy too.

That's just ridiculously funny. And pretty much nails my issues with the movie. Even with having to suspend disbelief for sci fi, that particular dealie was just a bridge too far, and that piece nails why.

Finally saw The Master last night and it really should have been called The Actors, because that's what I took away from it - the two leads are great actors.

Unfortunately, they act, and they act and they act. The film starts out brilliantly, but soon becomes a series of lengthy scenes featuring great actors... acting up a storm while the story more or less flounders.

Joaquin Pheonix gives one of those performances where the actor completely disappears into his character. His performance is amazing, but by the end of The Master I just wished that there'd been less of it.

Not bad, but very disappointing.
