I had a major crush on Jodie Foster back then, so it didn't stand out.

Okay so I watched a terrible movie and then an AMAZING movie double feature today.

So terrible first
Jesus Rolls. Only good thing is you hear the story of why Jesus served time for being a "pederast". A good character in a great movie just ruined.

Amazing
2004 Indie called Primer. It is a low budget production but so different, complex, and interesting. Very complex dialog driven.
Full movie is on the yt

The illustrated explanation video is probably worth the time after watching it if you are confused (my wife had a hard time finalizing it).

I've never seen Starship Troopers. I thought I remember it getting panned when it came out. Is it actually good?

Thought that Roth article was just OK, as much just a recap of the movie as anything else.

One thing he does mention is that the movie deviates pretty far from the book (by design!), and as I recall that was one reason why some audiences didn't like it. I saw it in the theater and enjoyed it, but I'm a noted connoisseur of the Busey family.

I have trouble with Starship Troopers for the same reason I do American Psycho. I know the movie is taking the piss a bit with the source material and is meant to be consumed ironically, but it's SOOOOO earnest and literal I don't see how most audiences are going to "get the joke".

In Verhoeven's defense, ST does wink at the camera a lot more than American Psycho does, but considering the topic is fascism it almost has to.

I think it's fun in a "something to kill time" kind of way. It's not as bad as a lot of the SCI-FI stuff that was proliferating about the same time.

OK it's not a movie I would EVER think about on this deep of a level. Space guys fight space monsters.

It really transcends "good" or "bad". I give credit for making something that can be absorbed on multiple levels.

I think it probably would have been better as a series. Take something like "The Handmaid's Tale" for example. Imagine a two-hour movie where the world where that series/book takes place but where the leaders/men are glorified. It would be pretty horrifying (as it should), but could deliver a powerful message. If you get that's the message at least. If you don't, you're apt to almost take the exact opposite message.

It can be enjoyed on that level, sure. But that's not what the movie is about.

Admittedly I never read the source material, either.

Well, I loved Robocop and really liked Total Recall (despite its cheesiness), so I think I'm gonna have to watch Starship Troopers too.

Oh, and I think American Psycho (the movie) is brilliant.

Fuck, I thought I was bad, but I got 35. Sad thing is, I'm not sure if I saw a couple of them. Sooo many Batmans, I've seen some. And I think I saw Avatar, but then I'm not sure. What is happening to my memory?
