And a sixteen-year-old girl
And a great big long limousine

Now that may not be love but it is all right

In Newman's defence - a vast majority of his classic songs involve assuming the role of a character.

He's a storyteller, not a confessional singer/songwriter. Part of what makes this song so great.

My friends tell me, that I've been such a fool.
But I had to stand by and take it baby, all for lovin' you.
Drown myself in sorrow as I look at what you've done.
But nothing seemed to change, the bad times stayed the same,
And I can't run.
Maybe the greatest blues lyrics ever.

(Freakin' at the) Freaker's Ball
by Shel Silverstein

There's gonna be a Freaker's Ball yes yes tonight at the Freaker's Hall
Ha ha yeah and you know that you're invited one and all
C'mon babies grease your lips grab your hats swing your hips
And don't forget to bring your whips I'll take you to the Freaker's Ball
Blow your whistle bang your gong roll up somethin' to take along
It feels so good but it must be wrong a freakin' at the Freaker's Ball
All the fags and the dikes they boogyin' together
Leather freaks're dressed in all kinds of leather
The greatest of the sadists and the masochists too
Screamin' please hit me and I'll hit you
The fbi a dancin' with the junkies all the straights a swingin' with the funkies
Cross the floor and up the wall a freakin' at the Freaker's Ball
Y'all a freakin' at the Freaker's Ball
[ horns ]
No hairs and long hairs kissin' each other mother with daughter son with mother
Smear my body up with butter and take me to the Freaker's Ball
Pass that roach and pour the wine I'll kiss yours and you'll kiss mine
I'm a gonna boogie till I go blind a freakin' at the Freaker's Ball
Oh the white freaks black freaks yellow and red ones
Necropheliacs a lookin' for dead ones
Tickers the sickers they're gettin' their kicks
With the womans libbers and the sexist pigs
The plastercasters castin' their plasters the masturbators baitin' their masters
Cross the floor and up the wall a freakin' at the Freaker's Ball
Y'all a freakin' at the Freaker's Ball y'all a freakin' at the Freaker's Ball

Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Gangsta whitewalls TV antennas in the back
You may not have a car at all
But remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you've got
Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Diamond in the back, sunroof top, diggin' the scene with a gangsta lean
Gangsta whitewalls, TV antennas in the back

Dear, Ron MacLean
Dear, Coach's Corner
I'm writing in order
For someone to explain
To my niece, the distinction
Between these mandatory pre-game group rites of submission
And the rallies at Nuremburg
Specifically the function
The ritual serves in conjunction
With what everybody knows
Is in the end a kid's game
I'm just appealing to your sense of fair play

When I say
She's puzzled by
This incessant pressure
For her to not defy
Collective will
Yellow-ribboned lapels
As the soldiers inexplicably rappel
Down from the arena rafters
If not so insane
Would be grounds for screaming laughter

Dear, Ron MacLean
I wouldn't bother with these questions
If I didn't sense some spiritual connection

We may not be the same
But it's not like we're from different planets
we both love this game so much
we can hardly fucking stand it

Alberta-born, prairie-raised
Ain't a sheet of ice north of Fargo I ain't played
From Penhold to the Gatineau
Every fond memory of childhood that I know
Is somehow connected
To the culture of this game, I can't just let it go

I guess it comes down to
What kind of world you want
To live in
If diversity is disagreement
Disagreement is treason
Well, don't be surprised if we find ourselves reaping

A strange and bitter fruit
That sad old man beside you
Keeps feeding to young minds as virtue
It takes a village to raise a child
A flag to raze the children
'Til they're nothing more than ballast for fulfilling
A madman's dream
Of a paradise
Complexity reduced to black and white

How do I
Protect her from
This cult of death?

Did you feel the breeze?
My love
Summer's kiss is over, baby
Over

Do you know the words?
Sing along with me
And put on your rose fur coat, baby
It's 1973

My love, this dream I have each night
I stare into a blinding light
Alone, I stare
Demons, be gone

Away from me
And come on down to the corner
I got something i want you to see
The burning sun

Too hot for shade
Come lay down in the cool grass
With me, baby let's watch that
Summer fade

My love, this dream I have each night
I stare into a blinding light
Alone, I stare
So sweet

This dream is not a dream
I wake with it
Inside of me
Alone, I swear

Turn it up, sabo.

In my mind, Stevie Wonder's run of albums from the late 60s-mid 80s is pretty much unmatched.

(His later stuff is also pretty good)

One of the great things about him is (was?) his absolute hatred of Richard Nixon. I'd heard that the song "You Haven't Done Nothing" was about that particular GOP POS.

And the lyrics are relevant today.
We would not care to wake up to the nightmare
That's becomin' real life, mm
But when misled who knows a person's mind
Can turn as cold as ice, um-hmm
Why do you keep on making us hear your song
Tellin' us how you are changin' right from wrong
'Cause if you really want to hear our views
You haven't done nothin'
(Turn it up!)

The car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel
And the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides
And a dark wind blows

The government is corrupt
And we're on so many drugs
With the radio on and the curtains drawn

We're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine
And the machine is bleeding to death

The sun has fallen down
And the billboards are all leering
And the flags are all dead at the top of their poles

It went like this:
The buildings tumbled in on themselves
Mothers clutching babies picked through the rubble
And pulled out their hair

The skyline was beautiful on fire
All twisted metal stretching upwards
Everything washed in a thin orange haze

I said: "kiss me, you're beautiful -
These are truly the last days"
You grabbed my hand and we fell into it
Like a daydream or a fever

We woke up one morning and fell a little further down -
For sure it's the valley of death
I open up my wallet
And it's full of blood

My brother's a fascist
Lives in Palacios
Fishes the pier every night
He holsters his Glock
In a double retention
He smokes while he waits for a bite
He don't like the Muslims, he don't like the Jews
He don't like the Blacks and he don't trust the news
He hates the Hispanics and alternate views
He'll tell you it's tough to be white

My sister's a Christian
She likes to go fishin'
She don't mind my brother at all
He puts her on Redfish
And Flounder and Trout
And they tear up the flats in the fall
She gets back to Dallas all sunburnt and sour
Worn out from slingin' plugs hour after hour
Seein' spots when she closes her eyes in the shower
She don't see a conflict at all

It's the state of the union, I guess
It's always been iffy at best
We're all in the family, the cursed and the blessed
It's the state of the union, I guess
We're all in the family, the cursed and the blessed
It's the state of the union, I guess

Mother turned eighty
The consummate Lady
We took her to Golden Corral
'Cause she likes the Yeast Rolls
And Bourbon Street Chicken
We oughta known better by now
'Cause me and my brother got into it good
I called him a hick and he called me a hood
He said, "Dad always treated his Mexicans good
"I guess you think you're better somehow"

"Yeah you think you're better
"Cardigan sweatered
"Snowflake if ever there was
"You think you're so cool
"'Cause you did good in school
"You got whipped every day on the bus"
Sister lit out 'fore the shoutin' got worse
Went to Wednesday night prayer at the new Christian church
With a cross on her neck and a nine in her purse
She might be the wisest of us

It's the state of the union, I guess
We're all in a hell of a mess
We're all in the family, the cursed and the blessed
It's the state of the union, I guess

It's the state of the union, I say
Christmas dinner might be hell to pay
So "How 'bout them Cowboys?" and "Have a blessed day!"
It's the state of the union, I say

It's the state of the union, I guess
It's always been iffy at best
We'll do all we're able with what we got left
It's the state of the union, I guess
We'll do all we're able with what we got left
It's the state of the union, I guess

Just reminded me of my father's reaction to seeing my then 2 yo daughter sing "I shot a man in Ree-moh, just to watch him die." He literally howled with laughter, which led her to sing Folsom Prison Blues to everyone. Didn't get a laugh from anyone else.
