Thanks to Florida's Stand Your Ground laws, the kid can't be held responsible because the mother was in his car.

Holy fuck, what is wrong with these people? Responsible gun ownership? Before this shooting, I would have said they are doing their cause a disservice with their gun-loving cowboy act and Facebook page, but now, goddamn. The shit she posts moves me further down the line on where limits should be placed on gun control. Who teaches a 4 yo how to shoot, then leaves a loaded .45 in the backseat with him?

She is cute, though.

On the flip side, reading through the comments on her FB page is really disheartening. Hundreds of comments on every post saying she deserved to die, they hope the kid kills her next time, criticizing the kid for having bad aim...

Gun store owner refuses sale based on a hunch that the customer "was going to do something" that ends up looking pretty prescient:

Howard returned to the gun shop later that day, but Downs locked the door and asked a customer to call 911.

Hocking County Sheriff's deputies located Howard's car one mile away at a Walmart. A gun was found in the back seat.

"When we arrived, he had almost 50 rounds of 20-gauge shot gun shell ammunition ready to purchase," Sheriff Lanny North said.

According to the Athens County prosecutor, "Howard was found in possession of a firearm while allegedly being drug dependent or in danger of becoming drug dependent. The firearm was purchased after he allegedly made a false statement on his background check form."

My point is not this specific gun law. It is the over-writing of laws in general. If they only went to such ridiculous extremes in anti-gun laws, well I wouldn't be exactly fine with that, but this kind of creep is all over criminal codes (and civil codes, for that matter) all across the country.

What a crazy situation. 22 year old soldier, who's black, just got done firing at his girlfriend and was going to leave the scene. The eventual victim, a former marine, white, (and CrossFit gym owner -beside the point but the CrossFit community is full of libertarian types and not many black people) decides to intervene and play hero. Gets shot dead. His pastor later said he was "just trying to help."

My snap reaction without all the facts? There was no imminent threat once the guy was in his car trying to leave. Having the firearm loaded and present now put the perp in the place of a victim and he, hyped up on adrenaline and nerves, defended himself and killed the guy. Calling the police and 911 for the girlfriend would have been preferable here.

Race, military, guns, Texas, potentially religion, and Ft. Hood (where the soldier is stationed) all rolled up into one? 'Murica. I wonder if PTSD gets brought into too.

I feel bad for the guy who died, but don't be a fucking hero. Get the license plate of the shooter and call the fucking cops. They're the ones trained to deal with this stuff. Yup. No brainer (see what I did there!), from what I've read, the girlfriend ran away, and the guy was in his car. It's not your job as a concealed carrier to chase down criminals. Like that woman who chased and shot a fleeing shoplifter at Home Depot. She still doesn't comprehend that she did something wrong. She still thinks she was justified in shooting someone in the back for shoplifting. It's a shame the guy died, and horrific that it happened in front of his wife, but his actions were criminal, and I wouldn't be surprised if the shooter can claim self defense. Sure, he is fucked for shooting his girlfriend, but I could very easily see a situation where the shooter could have been justified.

We did something similar for our second, except instead of a cake or balloons or shooting a(nother!) box we just asked for the doctor to look at the ultrasound and tell us, then we called our parents and texted our friends. Epic.
