I could have sworn we already had a Random Links thread, but I couldn't find the damn thing.

Anyway, an interesting article about the German-Soviet alliance between the World Wars that enabled both countries to advance their militaries. With awesome consequences for everyone involved.

And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

The old thread has a screwy title: Swamp 6 Link Dump Extravaganza

This is a better name, the old one is 28 pages. In with the new.

Wow, I really enjoyed that. I'd only read a little about military cooperation after 1933, I did not know it began nearly a decade before Hitler. The general history we are taught is that German remilitarization was entirely Hitler's idea. Under the Nazi's while there was much less cooperation in training and maneuvers with the Russians, but industrial and military-related trade and economic cooperation ramped up.

It is still amazing how little chemical weapons were used in WW2 (except of course in the extermination camps). Many ascribe it to the fact that Hitler suffered from a mustard gas attack in 1918, and he rejected using gas even when facing defeat.

She sure knows nature much better than I do. I'd been more afraid of a mama bear than a skinny wolf, but clearly she was very concerned for her dog.

A 600 year old oak tree in NJ may be dying
The tree is located beside the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, where it already stood for nearly 300 years before the church was built in 1717. Famous English evangelists James Davenport and George Whitefield preached to more than 3,000 people beneath the tree in 1740. George Washington picnicked under its shade.

Allied French troops under Gen. Jean Baptist de Rochambeau marched past the great oak tree en route to the Battle of Yorktown, Va.

The fuck is a SRO?
SROs were introduced in England and Wales last year and can be applied to any individual who the police believe poses a risk of sexual harm - even if they have never been convicted of a crime.

The order requires Mr O'Neil to disclose any planned sexual activity to the police or face up to five years in prison.

Jeez, that's scary. I believe some states allow sexual predators to be confined after they serve a prison term, and I believe that has been upheld, but I am pretty sure it requires a conviction.

That actually is not a horrible idea, most medical schools should be able to easily afford if it is priced somewhat reasonably ($ 5-10K I would guess)

But the usual patients w/o insurance worked fine for my generation.

Soooo glad I stopped working on that plane 10 years ago. As if morale and work wasn't bad enough in aircraft maintenance. Some people are getting fired soon.

That's the military for you. A bunch of barracks lawyers missing the point and arguing over dumb shit that doesn't matter when a crazy scandal is staring everyone in the face.

The military needs black and white rules for everything because it needs to be absolved from any level of liability.

I was once dressed down for wearing a backpack on both shoulders because the regulation (at the time) literally forbade you to "have anything draped over your right shoulder" because of the offhand chance you couldn't "render the proper salute." Nevermind the fact that you could throw your shoulders out of whack, an officer might cross your path and your right hand needs to be ready!

Meet The $700 Juicer

Bad startup ideas are a dime a dozen, but Juicero wasn’t some random product. It has a lot of funding behind it ($120 million, with backers that include Google’s venture capital arm) and is valued at nearly half a billion dollars.

Yes, it was. I wouldn't expect anything less from a guy who made his college teammates call him "Kobe Wade."
Fourth quarter, 10 seconds left. Tie game. I got the ball in my hands with the game on the line, and I already knew what was gonna happen. F*** an overtime, let’s get up outta here.

What’s the analytics on that?

That’s a W.

You guys catch Ja Rule and friend create the biggest scam of the year with the Fyre Festival? It was supposed to be a Coachella in the Bahamas but turned into Trust Fund Baby Hunger Games with a quickness. I feel bad for the swindled, but not as much as I should. There's a class action lawsuit for $100 million dollars in response.

Beer Pipeline in Germany
Organizers for the world’s biggest metal festival expect metal heads to consume so much beer they’re constructing a beer pipeline. The underground pipeline will be seven kilometers long and funnel 400,000 liters of beer to the festival. It will hold enough pressure to pump six beers in six seconds. To anyone who stood in line for a beer at concert, this will sound like a godsend.
