If there isn't much wind, it doesn't feel much different than 0 degrees. If it's windy, it's what I imagine it feels like having acid thrown in your face.

I don't think I ever really knew cold until I was in Chicago in the winter. It just feels different in the middle of the country.

Funny you say that. I grew up in Colorado where the temperature could drop very low. But, the first time I went on a business trip to Massachusetts, I couldn't believe how much colder I felt at similar temperatures, because of the wetness of the air. Then, I went to Chicago, and it was even that much worse, because you had low temps, damp air, and that fucking wind!

I love Chicago and the people who live there, but I don't know if I could ever live in a place so cold. I almost got a job there a couple years ago, and I thought about that a lot.

One odd thing about living in Buffalo, you really notice days when it isn't windy.

I spent 3 winters living in Chicago, and it was 3 too many.

The first cold snap (about -10 with the wind chill) I went through, I was holed up in my apartment in Lincoln Park for 2 days (my car wouldn't start, so I didn't even try to go to work), but then I ran out of food, so I had to venture out to the grocery store.

Halfway there I thought I was just going to lay down on the sidewalk and die, like I was in a Jack London novel.

Toronto can be brutal (as it is now), but our winters are comparable to Detroit or Chicago...

I spent 4 winters in Montreal, and it was like being in hell. Ice storms are a regular feature there, and the city is an island in the middle of what has to be the coldest river in the world. And the winds come down from the arctic with nothing but ice fishing huts to block their way.

flight to Chicago got canceled this morning. the joys of working from home and being flexible meant I was able to call SWA right away and get booked on a flight to Indy. and then now have to rent a car in Indy and drive to Kalamazoo ... where I will spend the entire weekend drinking bell's

Don't sleep on Arcadia Brewing in Kalamazoo either. The Kalamazoo Beer Exchange is a cool concept too.

the beer exchange looked cool. so definitely worth going to? Will add arcadia to the list. Latitude 42 any good too? That's not far from the hotel.

I *think* I'm gonna have a fair amount of free time this weekend and have guys to go drink with. GF does synchronized skating and it's the regional competition this weekend. if they place top five, we're back in the AZO in a month.

Beer Exchange is definitely worth a visit. Some people think it's a little goofy, others get into it, but the selection is pretty great regardless. Haven't tried Latitude 42 yet, but I've heard good things.

Thirded on the M-43. We get it in CO every so often and it's become a go-to for me.
I would like expensive whiskey.

Only in the plus side single digits here, but twice in the past 24 hours I've grabbed an outside doorknob with a damp hand and gotten stuck.

Its been bananas here in Seattle over the last week or so. 4 major snow storms and the city has been completely shut down. It looks like finally the weather is going to change back to rain, but its going to take a while to melt the foot or so of snow on the ground.

But, lucky for me, we are leaving tomorrow morning for sunny Mexico!

.75 inches of rain had fallen by noon making it the rainest Valentine's Day in Las Vegas history. About .30 inches have fallen since then making it the first day with more than an inch of rain here in three years (the average ANNUAL rainfall in Las Vegas is 4.1 inches).

Was the last one the last time I was in Vegas (June 2016)? I remember one day it absolutely dumped during the afternoon with flash flood warnings, etc. By the time I left work, sidewalks were dry, but puddles remained.

Might well have been. Usually the storms with a lot of rain are in monsoon season (summer). Getting soaked all day like yesterday is even rarer.

All roads/highways between Nevada and California are now closed because of snowstorms. (This includes Northern and Southern Nevada/California -- an almost 400-mile long border).

This is one for the record books.

This was the final road open:
