I was so pissed when my family went on a girls trip a couple weeks ago and they had to stay an extra day cause of a snowstorm.

Know at least a handful of people who drove up to the Carolinas from here a few weeks ago to frolic in the snow.

Yeah, luckily if the snow won't come to me, I can go to the snow.

Decided to work at the cabin today and take the dog for a stroll.

That all sounds great until you get to the power outage part. No power on a cold night kinda sucks, no?

Lucky. We we just short of 2 feet when I last measured. And of course my snowblower won't start. Last storm, the pull chord broke. I fixed it and got the blower started on the first pull. Today, nothing. My driveway is somewhere between 8,000 and 6,000 square feet, so this isn't feasible. Called the guy who installed my patio, he said he could come tomorrow. Kids helped me make a path big enough for a car to get through in an emergency, but I was very lucky to have two neighbors bring their snowblowers over when they finished their own driveways. One guy is a Libertarian nutjob on the town FB forum and flies a Don't Tread on Me flag. Really prefer not to get chummy with him, but he is friendly when I have talked to him, and I was in no position to turn down help.

I'll take my repair questions to another thread...

Took three kids sledding and two of them ended up crying after hitting a bump (the same bump, separate trips down the hill) and losing the sled and hitting the ground but only one of those was my kid so not bad?

Another major storm coming through on Sunday would be an absolute killer for all of the restaurants trying to make a go of Super Bowl Sunday via takeout/delivery. And me looking to get some wings.

Weather Channel app took a major shift. I'm seeing 24% chance of rain. Was showing 40% of snow earlier today. Hopefully this trend continues.

I checked this morning after seeing your post and Sunday looked pretty good. As of right now it seems to be back to a 50% chance of snow.

I always debate that watching these videos. Seems safer in the car until you see that pickup get launched at the 25 second mark. If you can get really far away from the road, probably best move, but flying debris can get you.

Was there some kind of blind curve? Just seems strange to see those vehicles coming at such speed. I know they were all sliding on ice, but why the initial speed?

From what I've read everything was just fine before they hit icy road. Got lulled into a sense of security and when they realized they hit ice, they couldn't stop.

Having been in one of those chain reaction deals on a highway* in good weather, I get how it happens. 70 mph traffic doesn't just come to an abrupt stop so I imagine adding ice + 18 wheelers doesn't help.

* Fuck the Garden State Parkway. The split second between us getting stopped just before the car in front of us and being hit from behind is one of those "felt like an eternity" moments I'll never forget given the kids in the backseat.

Gawd, that must be horrific. To be stuck in a pileup just waiting for the next big rig to come plow into the pile. Sheesh.

I remember years ago they had horrible, opaque dust storm on I-5 in central California. Ended up being a 93-car pileup[ because more and more cars just kept running into the pile.

Yep, at least 5 dead and dozens injured.

I still think the safest place would be to stay in the car. Especially if it's dark. You'd get out of the car to go where? Probably slip and fall or get run over.
