We lost power 3:00 pm Wednesday, now they are saying we will be down until next Wednesday night. Lots of trees and wires down everywhere. Next door neighbor has a 100 foot tree across his lawn, and a giant limb went through his ceiling into his dining room. Said it’s like a cork, so no air or snow getting in. We have a tree service inspect and trim every year, but we still have 5 or 6 limbs over 15 feet long in our yard.

A buddy of mine who lives in Morristown, NJ said the temp inside his home was in the 40s after he lost power. He sent his wife and kids over to his in-laws' place, while he rode it out in the house. I was envisioning him in a scene from The Shining.

Yeah, our neighbor across the street said it was colder inside than out yesterday. Old houses without insulation.

cerrano lost power a little later on Wednesday, but has pretty much the same ETA for a fix.

Damn, that all sucks a lot. I am generally fine losing power for a few hours. It's somewhat exciting. But for a week, in winter?

I lucked out and got power back this afternoon. Almost 4000 residents, or 50% of my town is still out and it isn’t getting any warmer tonight. Stay strong, North San Juarsey.

It gets old fast. We lost power for 10 days during Sandy, Irene and the freak October snow storm in a two or 3 year period. We got power back Sunday around 11:30. It took close to 24 hours after we lost power until the first plow could get through. There were so many trees and wires down, the plows couldn't get to our street. They eventually plowed a narrow path that weaved around trees and wires, then the town sent large loader tractors through to push trees onto front lawns so the plows could widen the roads. 3 days later, an electric company truck from Pennsylvania came through, and moved trees and limbs off the wires so another crew could come through fix the lines.

According to the electric company's website, only 3 houses in my town are without power now, but there are still a lot of trucks around town. I saw trucks from Alabama, Mississippi, Ohio, Michigan, Maine and Pennsylvania, plus dozens of trucks with companies that aren't NJ, but didn't have an address. Pretty incredible seeing people come in from that far away working all night outside in the snow.

First night we were trapped at home. We have a wood burning stove, so we all slept in the family room around the stove. We spent two nights at my inlaws who live 20 minutes away. They didn't lose power somehow, despite most of the neighborhood going down. My FiL was pissed because they cut his power for 30 minutes to get their neighbors back on. He lost 1 full degree of heat during that ordeal! Saturday morning we got incredibly lucky, and found a portable generator for sale. I was able to get that hooked up to the furnace, so we had heat and a bunch of extension cords throughout the house. It worked great, and was shockingly easy. [no pun intended there] I just need to keep up on the maintenance of the generator. Seems like half my neighbors with generators couldn't get them running. Temperature on my house thermostat read 45 degrees, but it was much colder downstairs and in the family room. It's all glass, and the cheap bastard previous owners who built the addition skimped on the windows. We had an estimate for better insulated windows, and the quote was over $32,000.

The real question is how many days in does it take you before you stop trying to turn the lights on in every room you walk into?

here we go again!

we didn't lose power the last time around. only cable and internet for 5 days. both the Mrs and the boy were distraught at lack of tv and wifi (sprint sucks by us, as it does many places, but that's a rant for another thread) .. lost a lot of trees.. that saddened me.. going to miss the shade and cover and the color.

bigger issue is this is screwing up the spring footie season. grass fields will be unplayable and plastic ones may not melt in time. oh joy.

Sources are reporting to Mrs. rass that school has already been cancelled tomorrow.

And yeah flaco, this is really effing up spring soccer. Oldest's team is supposed to play in the Howell tourney on Saturday, so that's likely out if we get as much snow as is being called for. Both kids have home games league scheduled on Sunday on grass, and those will be called, too. At least I don't have to worry about rescheduling the tournament games.

Kids have Spring Break next week, snow days already cut into break, so they now have school on Monday. No chance they are in school tomorrow, and maybe Thursday, too. At this rate, break is down to 2 days, and my procrastination in figuring out what to do with them will be rewarded!

that's an early spring break! our spring break is good friday and the following week, but with school canceled tomorrow, were down to good friday, easter sunday and tuesday. if we have this thursday off, spring break will be a 4 day weekend.

for me, i'm coaching during spring break, so being in school is not that big a deal, but today was only the third day since march 2nd that we've been outside for lacrosse, even with turf. i don't think baseball or softball has had a day on their field to date.

this is getting old as fuck.

We're on a scheduled half day that they're only preserving to avoid losing another day of spring break but there's no way school should be on. Also, it took them two 5:00-6:00 phone calls to clarify that "dismissed at usual time" meant for a usual school day and not the expected half day time.

We had break last week, shortened by 2 days because of overused snowdays. Today was the first day back from break, and they cancelled. Not sure where we are going to make that one up. This year sucks so far.

I can't fucking take much more of this. Mid April, other than one anomaly in February, haven't had a day warmer than the low 40s. Today is 38 degrees and drizzling.

But that's nothing compared to what the weekend holds...
Rain ahead of a slow moving system is expected to change to freezing rain early Saturday morning as colder air moves into the region. The freezing rain may persist for a few hours before changing to ice pellets. Several centimetres of ice pellets are likely during the day.

Latest analysis is suggesting that there will be a lull in the precipitation for much of Saturday night with maybe some patchy freezing drizzle. However, another surge of moisture will move back into the region late overnight or early Sunday morning. A prolonged period of freezing rain is possible Sunday before changing over to rain heavy at times later in the day.

There remains considerable uncertainty with regards to how long the freezing rain will last before changing over to rain on Sunday. However, the potential exists for some locales to see amounts in excess of 20 mm (0ne inch) of freezing rain on Sunday.

Ice accumulations of this magnitude combined with gusty northeast winds to 60 km/h may result in widespread power outages due to fallen tree limbs and power lines.

Winter driving condition are expected on untreated roads Saturday and Sunday.

Flooding may become a threat in some areas by Sunday evening.

Oh, there will be power outages. An inch of ice will do that.

Looks like it won't be humid though, so it'll only feel like 90 fucking degrees, not 100 fucking degrees.

School board voted to hold a makeup day next Saturday. Kids are thrilled. Initially, a lot of people were saying they weren't sending their kids, but if they don't get 68% attendance, they need to schedule another makeup day.
