School Days

Re: School Days
The UC colleges were on a quarter system, with school starting in late September and ending middle of June. One year I think classes started October 1st. I thought that was awesome, since even if studying for finals and writing papers, you couldn't not enjoy June in Cali. It was weird having two or three football games before school started.
Although I haven't been involved in elementary and secondary education for a long time, this extension of the school year into the summer, from both ends, is just ridiculous.

Who knows? Maybe, you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away and held for ransom.

Re: School Days
I grew up in extreme Northern Maine aka Potato Country. Our school started in the third week of August, went for three weeks, then had a three week break for "potato harvest". Elementary school age kids would work for local farmers and be given a area in each field to load dug up potatoes manually into barrels and get paid by the barrel. High school age kids would work on "harvesters" which would entail standing on a slowly moving tractor which would have a conveyor belt which would require kids to remove rocks while the potatoes were conveyed to a truck driving alongside.
As a result, most kids started the school year with shitty clothes but when school resumed in October, everyone was dressed to the nines. Young kids could earn in the $200-$600 range while high schoolers could earn up to a couple Gs. The day ran from 5:30am-4:00pm+ six days a week. it's laughable how many labor laws were broken but we didn't know any better.
The tradition has now been stopped and school now starts up there after Labor Day. Pussies.

Re: School Days
Always after Labor Day until about middle school age, then August. College was usually August 20th or so.
Snow days plus elections plus bomb threats means we haven't gotten out before the 3rd week in June in years

Oh, and in the current school district, kids start last week of August. Next year, they will start August 14 so they can get a full week at Thanksgiving, take semester finals before Xmas break, and get out on June 1.

Re: School Days
It was September for me, but my daughter sure starts early. August 17th this year (high school).

Re: School Days
Mid August to account for the inevitable snow days. We still usually went to June.
You know what you need? A lyrical sucker punch to the face.
Re: School Days
6am screaming matches start tomorrow for my family. I never started before labor day.
Re: School Days
I'm pretty sure my school always started the week before Labor Day. I remember really liking that four-day week for week 2.
My kids start a week or so earlier than that now.

Re: School Days
City of Atlanta starts tomorrow--tomorrow! As in, middle of the summer tomorrow. You won't convince me that school should begin in August. Rerun came closest, but Labor Day belongs as part of the summer. That's why it's there!

Where I live, very few homes, and certainly no schools have AC. No humidity, mild climate.Ryan wrote:Sidebar - did your (does your kids') elementary school have AC?

Re: School Days
here grades 1 to 12 start tuesday after labour day, university the day after.
Kung Fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene..
Re: School Days
Usually at some point during the week of Labor Day.
Back in 2013, the kids went back to school the Monday after Labor Day, I guess because it was so early that year (9/2)? We were able to rent a house at the NJ shore the week of Labor Day for about 1/2 of the peak summer price. The weather was great, the ocean was as warm as it gets around here, and there were so few people. It was great. We've gone the week before Labor Day the last couple of years since (and will be going that week this year), but it's not quite the same.

Re: School Days
In Virginia we legally cannot start before Labor Day...but it will change next year. Why you may ask. $ and Lobbying from the amusement park industry. The "Kings Dominion Law"

In Baltimore I don't remember ever starting school before Labor day (but fall sports practice did). However that has changed. VA Schools go deep into June. Actually caused some high school kids problems as the last weeks overlap the start of sports recruiting events.

Re: School Days
When I was I school, we started the last week of August. My wife and kids start next week. Some of the schools here start tomorrow. This is the earliest that I remember. They are now getting a week break in October, instead of the normal four day weekend. At least they have AC. My podunk elementary did not. Indiana is humid as fuck during August. And September can still be rough.
And still get out first week of June. Maybe memorial day, if there are no snow days (which is highly unlikely).

Re: School Days
On the other side of the coin...I noticed some of you guys on facebook on last day of school in July. Our last day was June 4th this year. It gets warmer earlier in different parts of the year, you know?

Re: School Days
Michigan passed a law saying the public school districts couldn't start until after Labor Day. We take our Up North tourism dollars seriously around here apparently.
The kids get out mid-June.
Band practices start mid-August, however. Football season starts before classes do.

Re: School Days
This is the single best thing about starting school early. You get out way earlier in May and can get a rental at offseason rates. Of course, no one else can go with us and we get outnumbered into 4th of july rates but we have enjoyed plenty hot May vacations in the past while the water is still cool.rass wrote:Usually at some point during the week of Labor Day.
