Yacht. Rock. Holiday. Concentrating on chillin' right.

Who knows? Maybe, you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away and held for ransom.

There's only three or four of you (Howard and rass absolutely being two of them) who are going to get the reference, but it was totally worth it.

I feel that brian generally underestimates in his "I don't care if only X people get this reference" posts, but he included me this time, so YEAH!

Sirius/XM did a pretty good job of expanding the playlist a bit this summer (though I'm not really a fan of Chuck E's In Love).
I felt aswirl with warm secretions.

This series is awesome, if you have an hour or so.
"Enjoyed this one," Gunpowder told the Burlington Observer. "But it's back to work tomorrow."

Most of the stuff they added was solid but I'm with you on that. More Chuck Mangione (including the theme to Cannonball Run!) was inspired.

Ahhhh Yacht Rock.

Gerry Rafferty? Score.

Bob Welch? Score the same.

Dig deeper and you unearth gems like Steve Forbert. You can also stay on the surface and appreciate the depths of guys like Al Stewart. The Year of the Cat is freaking brilliant, yet so are On the Border and Flying Sorcery...

Sirius/XM has a Yacht Rock station now...Which was likely spun off 'The Bridge' in an effort to emphasize the folksier content on said station.

Unfortunately the Yacht Rock station is for the summer only. It's probably gone around Labor Day.

God, I haven't thought about Al Stewart in years. But you are completely correct.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Yeah, Year of the Cat is amazing. You can hear the Alan Parsons' in the production.

The lyrics are astounding.

On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolor in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat

She doesn't give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow 'till your sense of which direction
Completely disappears
By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls
There's a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says, I feel my life
Just like a river running through
The year of the cat

While she looks at you so cooly
And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea
She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her, to find what's waiting inside
The year of the cat

Well morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away your choice you've lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the new-born day
You know sometime you're bound to leave her
But for now you're going to stay
In the year of the cat
The song just begs a movie to be written surrounding it. Or a novella. Something.

You could write it from any of a dozen angles, too.

When I think of Yacht Rock (btw, I got the reference too, Brian), I don't include Bob Welch or Steve Forbert. The former too bluesy, the latter too folky. For me the classic example of yacht rock would be Christopher Cross. Also, Kenny Loggins and the Michael McDonald songs of the Doobies. Al Stewart for sure.

I'm not a fan of yacht rock, fwiw.

If they ever make a movie about Christopher Cross, Chris Pratt is a no brainer for the lead, right?

If he's willing to go back to his chubby Andy Dwyer look.

And I know I've mentioned this before, but dammit it was just so mean, I once saw a documentary on VH1 that referenced Christopher Cross as the prime example of an artist whose career was ruined by MTV because he was too damn ugly for music videos.

amazing rock trivia: Christopher Cross once successfully subbed live for an ailing Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. Absolute truth.

I'd never considered him even a guitar player but watching that 1980 clip above - that's damn impressive work, even some of his rhythm.

In all seriousness, this form of music just may be the worst in history. It makes Euro disco sound like it has soul.

Hornsby's cover of Black Muddy River on Day of the Dead is fantastic as well.

Also, apparently I'm not the Bon Iver fan boi that I thought I was. This cover is Bruce Hornsby and DeYarmond Edison. It had completely slipped my mind that DeYarmond Edison is Justin Vernon's pre-Bon Iver project. In my defense, I'm not sure anyone outside of Sheboygan (full circle threadjacking) had ever heard of DeYarmand Edison.

Saw Hornsby at Telluride a few years back. He's gone the jam route. He's not very good at it.
