Now, seriously, you guys don't believe that, do you? None of us really know for certain if there is or isn't a deity or an afterlife, right? So, supposing such things do exist, why can't we imagine our own, more logical version, rather than the version more commonly believed? Remember years ago when we discussed Voltaire's version, where there is a deity, but one that really doesn't judge much? Personally, I imagine it something like the old Albert Brooks movie Defending Your Life. I think such a deity would put Sybian on the stand, make a couple jokes about his being a lawyer and how that can't be good, note some excessive masturbation, and assuming Syb hasn't done anything like the shit posted elsewhere on this thread, he'd then let him off with whatever constitutes a slap on the wrist in the afterlife.

But, I also hope there is a hell for some of the folks we discuss in this thread.

Hell is a Christian invention. Jesus talks about it constantly throughout the NT, refers to it specifically as a physical place, describes it in detail, and is pretty clear that the only truly unforgivable crime is apostasy.

First, I told you about the excessive masturbation in confidentiality. I am deeply hurt that you would share that.

As for hell, there is no hell in Judaism, so being taught at a young age that hell doesn't, it is really hard as an adult to imagine it is real, or invent my own version of what I believe it to be. Like J-Lo said, hell, or eternal damnation is a Christian concept. IMO, it was created as a form of political control to scare people into practicing the religion, thus strengthening the powers that be within the religion. Not a knock on Christianity, but many religions instill a fear of not following in order to maintain itself. Without the fear, the flock will dissipate and the religion dies.

So, if by chance the new Testament is accurate, which I am really not open to accepting without a level of evidence that would require the Rapture and my actually seeing Jesus ride in on a blood soaked White Horse firing off his AR-15, then yes, I am going to hell for not accepting Jesus as my personal savior. I have zero fear of eternal damnation for failing to accept Jesus as savior.

A somewhat friend of my wife (Facebook friend really, but she's hung out with her more than I have which is twice) was driving her 8 year old daughter to school Tuesday morning through very heavy fog on a sidestreet pretty close to our house. There was a flatbed trailer parked on the street and she didn't see it and ran into it full speed (speed limit is probably either 40 or 45), severly injuring her and killing her daughter. My "WTF is wrong with people" thoughts yesterday were directed towards the truck driver who apparently did not put orange cones around his truck as required by law and really, why would you park it on a street in heavy fog? But find out this morning, neither the mom nor the daughter were wearing seatbelts. I know Anne is going to live with this pain for the rest of her life, especially if the death could've been prevented, but WTF is wrong with people who would drive anywhere without their seatbelts fastened and allow their kids to also not wear theirs??

The Hand Formula was famously discussed in a case against the Ford Pinto, which Ford knew would explode in low speed rear end accidents. But that is what happens in the Free Market. Profits are the only thing that matters, and what the Libertarians and Freemarketeers is that the consumer can't take any of that into account when choosing the products they buy.
