But a few hours later when he went to change her diaper he found her cold and not breathing.

A medical examiner would determine the girl died of blunt force trauma. Her liver was ruptured by the blows.

"It wasn't four times, eight times, I didn't put her in a headlock, it was two times. I said 'Go lay down' and she crawled away.'"

For a two-year period starting in January 2011 the man raped his stepdaughter, who was between 10 and 12 years old at the time, the criminal reports said.

The man, whose name is being withheld to protect the identity of the girl, appeared in Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City yesterday afternoon via videolink from Hudson County jail in Kearny.

The man was surprised when he was told bail had been set at $250,000 prior to his hearing by Hudson County Superior Court Judge Paul DePascale.

“Is it really $250,000?” the man asked the CJP judge incredulously. When the judge said yes, the man uttered, “Oh s , so I gotta sit in here? I didn’t even do anything.”

I ask because to me, after having my son, violence against a small child is probably the most understandable kinds of violence there is. Not excusable, but understandable.

A long pattern of physical abuse, that I could not understand. But totally losing it and smacking or shaking a kid you are responsible for who just ... won't ... stop ... crying? There, but for the grace of God, etc.

Oct 17 (Reuters) - A Victoria's Secret employee who stopped two 17-year-old girls suspected of shoplifting on Thursday found a possible human fetus inside a bag they were carrying, New York City police said.

Both teens were placed in police custody after the discovery on Thursday afternoon, with one of them taken to Bellevue Hospital, New York City Police Detective Michael DeBonis said.

DeBonis declined to comment on local media reports that the girl taken to the hospital may have recently given birth.

"Two female Hispanics were inside the Victoria Secret in Herald Square. They were stopped by a Victoria Secret employee and believed to be shoplifting," DeBonis said.

The employee at the midtown Manhattan store made a gruesome discovery when checking a bag they were carrying for possible merchandise, police said.

"It looks like a possible human fetus," DeBonis said.

DeBonis said a police investigation was continuing and more would be known once the medical examiner's office had made its finding in the case. A representative of the medical examiner's office was not immediately available for comment.
