I've finally been waiting for an Anthony Hopkins vehicle that is a remake of a horrible 1970s movie from a horrible 1960s book. So I say yes as well.

The old 1970s movie is on Syfy soon and I'm going to record it. I remember enjoying it, but I don't remember it well. My interest in the new remake is pretty low.

The trailers look really cool, and it made for a good Simpsons parody episode.

First post was more of a quick placeholder but guys, this is really good. Like on par with the best episodes of Game of Thrones. People are going to be talking about this shit.

I don't remember much about the old movie except it sucked. Seems like half my high school was at the drive in that night, fun night bad movie.

Will watch it tonight, since there is no baseball. My buddy at HBO says it rocks, but he said that about Vinyl.

My wife and I watched it last night. With all the southern Utah Canyonlands scenery, I'll be in no matter how good or bad the show is - but I thought it was really good. Creepy as hell from the beginning to the end.

But not nearly enough smut for the first episode of an HBO series. In fact, I don't think there was any (consensual) sex at all. WTF?

I read a review on Vox saying that the plot gets scattered and hard to follow over the next few episodes. But I'll stick it out.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

So, it's Total Recall, meets Hunger Games, meets Fantasy Island. I thought it was good not great. I'll keep watching.

…meets Blade Runner.

I dug it a lot, high hopes. Ed Harris is no Yul Brynner, but that character is very different from the (bad) movie.

The original 1970s movie (Richard Benjamin, James Brolin, Yul Brynner) is on SyFy network tonight (85% and 4 stars on rotten tomatoes).

Yeah, I watched the 1st episode last night as well. Looks like fun.

On a related note, I don't think I could have sex with a robot. I have no moral objection to it per se, I think I'd just be creeped out.

I understood that they have narrative cycles. I think they go longer than a day - probably a week?

And who are any of us kidding? If one of those bots was ready, willing, and able, of course we would fuck them.

So, I watch this show with my wife. That whole question about "would you?" was rolling in my head watching this episode. I really don't think you can get away with the whole "but, honey, it was a BOT!" when they are that humanoid. I mean, LOTS of women aren't cool with dudes jacking it to porn. I know a lot of them SAY they are cool (and I'm sure, for a variety of reasons, they might be) -- but deep down, most women are not OK with it.

This? That's just a bridge WAY too far.

(And to answer the question, I would 100 PERCENT be down. I can also see some scenarios where a couple could make this work -- Looking at the dude from Houston, if you know what I'm saying. wink wink, nudge nudge... Right?

What... creepy?)

(And, btw, this is just one example of what I think is pretty brilliant aspect of the show. Is the rape scene in the first episode a crime? Should you have empathy for what is essentially a machine? I know this isn't groundbreaking stuff... Blade Runner and more recently Ex Machina are excellent examples of this plot device.

That said, I love both of those movies and I'm definitely into a longer, larger and potentially deeper exploration of the topic. And, obviously, given the look ahead scenes, sure doesn't look all that clear cut how the "machines" fare in this one.)

Not a crime, as the newcomers can do whatever they want to the AI. Without threat of harm back (so far). One guy in first episode commented that he went "full evil" his last visit. Basically, they can do whatever they want to AI for the money they are paying.

I think you're being too technical. I think the real question is whether the rape in the first episode is a Bad Thing.

Yeah, I more meant the ethics of it... poorly worded. I think the show is putting the viewer in a number of dilemmas from a moral/ethical standpoint.

I'm twenty minutes into the 2nd episode and I just realized...This is LARPing.

You dress up as something you're not and interact with a bunch of non player characters and go on quests.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'm sure there is a contingent of people who make fun of nerds but would go to this random world in a minute.

Oh, and I'd totally fuck a robot if they were as real as the characters on the show. The girl in white that would help me get dressed would get it before I entered the world.

Still enjoying the show otherwise.

I'm relatively entertained week in and week out anyway, but there are so many questions and so much up in the air that I just have this feeling that if they can stick the landing it might really be something special. We'll see...

I'm still with it and enjoying it. Hell, the scenery porn alone is worth it for me. But I get this nagging feeling that if I really understood what was going on, I'd think the plot was really stupid and I wouldn't like it as much.

So, that got interesting fast...

Should have put it here for the record, but I called the reveal about Bernard a few weeks back.

A couple other great mind-fuck theories I've heard:
[+] spoiler
Bernard is a host copy of Arnold, Anthony Hopkins's original partner who mysteriously "died" in the park years ago.
[+] spoiler
William(the nice guy dragged to the park by his douchebag co-worker)'s story is actually taking place in an earlier timeline, and he turns out to be Ed Harris's character.
Going to miss Clementine. That actress captured the "weird looking yet insanely hot at the same time" look better than anyone I can think of.

I unfortunately saw a headline referencing a reveal about Bernard (but not specifically what was revealed) so it was sort of spoiled for me. The moment of viewer realization when he couldn't see the door was still cool.

That was the theory I was referencing up above when I was wondering if they can really make it work. I hope so. Here is an article I read yesterday on some of the subtle touches pointing towards it:

I'm not sure if these theories count as spoilers, since they are just speculation and don't give away what actually happens in a recent episode, but my response to that speculation ...
[+] spoiler
The dual timeline things makes sense to me, except for one thing. In the William timeline, Dolores seems to be finding herself, learning that there is a bigger world out there, and deciding to break out of her programmed life. I'm not sure if it makes a lot of sense for that to be happening in the past given how straightforward Dolores's character was in the early episodes. Plus, does it really make sense for William to come back to the park twenty years later and repeatedly brutally rape Dolores?

My guess is:

William decides to go all-in on Dolores, burning all bridges with his regular life, then she gets "reset" and this sets him down the path of becoming the jaded nihilist we see in Harris's character.
