Saw these two things while scrolling Reddit this morning. Makes for an uplifting Tuesday.

Wyoming Area grad’s speech cut short following critical remarks

A porn star named August Ames killed herself this week. She backed out of a job, then said that she didn't want to work with guys who also did gay porn, because of the perceived extra level of risk. Twitter ganged up on her and called her homophobic. This, combined with whatever else she had been going thru, apparently led to her suicide.

She wanted to protect her body. LGBTs thought that she was spreading misinformation. And now the gays and the SJWs are getting blamed for a suicide. Social media remains as toxic as ever.

Yea, that was some shit to read about via Reddit/Instagram lists and then actually reading more about to figure out why. Very sad all around.

This Logan Paul shit is something else.

Long story short. YouTuber went to a "suicide forest" in Japan and they stumbled upon a person who recently hanged himself. It was filmed and uploaded as a monetized video. The internet is going nuts about it.

Read a little of the outrage this morning, then noticed that my 10 year old was listening to a Logan Paul song on my Spotify account at home (via pop up on my phone), and had a little outrage myself.

Raise your hand if you didn't know who the guy was until Top Chef last week and now can't get away from him.

*Raise

I don't think I've ever seen a more stupid title than "Social Media Influencer". What a douche canoe.

Wasn't he that big Vine star from a few years back? If so, I'm sure everyone here saw his short vids then. They were pretty funny at the time.

I literally have no idea. I've never heard of any Vine stars or "social media influencers".

The whole thing just makes me want to move to some small village in Ecuador (even more than I normally do).

I knew of his brother, because he sings a song my son likes, and is on a Disney Channel show. The kids were excited to see Logan Paul on the Top Chef preview. At the end of his segment, my wife and I tried to figure out why they bothered to have him on the show. He added absolutely nothing, and i can't imagine he brought many of his fans to Top Chef.

I thought this Vanity Fair piece was pretty good and verbalizes many of my thoughts, especially the pervasiveness of social media.

What should remain troubling is that they will be replaced. And quite likely by more and worse. YouTube culture—perhaps social media in general—exists in a state of entropy. Gamergate gave way to the alt-right, just as whatever you want to call these fratty white boys aping Jackass and appropriating dated hip-hop poses will probably lead to some other horror. Because there hasn’t actually been much done to guide or, frankly, police YouTube by anyone who might have once had the power to do so—other than the creators themselves. Which of course was the egalitarian dream of the platform, one that once sounded nice, as some utopian earlier-Internet ideal. But just as Twitter has shown—in its descent from a forum for amusing one-liners to a hellish bog of harassment and Nazism—when left nearly entirely to its own devices, the central spirit of the Internet hive mind, its great howling id, tends toward darkness.

Emphasis in the quote is mine and that tends to be pretty much where I'm at these days. If the moral arc of the universe bends towards justice as Martin Luther King surmised, then I think the arc of the Internet bends towards evil and emboldening the forces of evil.

Like Tommy Lee Jones' character in No Country For Old Men, I don't know how to feel or what to think about that. I surely don't.

I'd be curious if that's true. If my kid liked garbage celebrities I would have had her watch to see if it got her into the show / cooking.

Yes, that was him.

And his brother was on Bizarrdvarks. Disney let him go after he posted some bullshit on his YouTube channel.

I just can't see kids tuning in if a guy they watch on youtube plugged his appearance on a show like Top Chef. I think my daughter finally grasps the concept of live TV. We really only watch DVR, on demand, or streaming, so she didn't get the concept of her shows not being on when she wanted, and not being able to fast forward a live broadcast. I rarely listen to radio, and she was pissed I couldn't replay a song on live radio. It's so funny how basic concepts of TV viewing have changed so drastically. Similar thing happened the one time my son had his picture taken with a camera with film. He was a toddler, and couldn't understand why he couldn't immediately see the picture.

Yeah, the concept of live TV is a weird one to explain, especially given that its not truly live in most instances.

I didn't watch the video, but the clips I saw this morning on the news weren't what I expected. I thought it was going to be a lot more flippant than it seemed to be. At least from the short clips they showed.

My thought is you don't go into the fucking suicide forest just to film some general spooky shit. You're hoping you find a body.

(ETA: Dude went to Ohio U, son. Makes more sense now.)

That's the brother, but yeah, lock him and and throw away the key. He scares old rich people with his antics. Bring out the pitchforks and torches.

Funny, but it was my technophobic inlaws, 10 years ago, when they were still using 35mm cameras.

I didn't get the intended audience for that one given he's supposed to be well-known enough that we know who he is but not so well known that it's appropriate for People to mention him.

Barstool Sports is to Boston people what Breitbart is to alt-right Nazi trolls. Hardly read by anyone except its core constituency and completely inflated in its importance.

Just go with it.

Forgive me if my shock just isn't coming through. You make a career out of objectifying women and being a complete asshole under the guise of "hey, I'm just saying what everyone is thinkin', amirite???" and shit like this comes out. I feel bad for his kids. I don't understand how his wife didn't understand what kind of person he is and the people at barstool are, but that's outside looking in.

Guy lives very public life of being a scumbag, acts like scumbag, apologizes for acting like a scumbag. Joke.
