Mike Peluso vs. The New Jersey Devils

Post by bapo! »

Some of you hockey guys might remember Mike Peluso, an enforcer for the Devils back in the day. He's in bad shape now, and he's suing his former employer for workers' comp. A lot of former hockey and football players are involved in litigation, so it's easy to gloss over these stories, but this one is particularly appalling.

The short version: He got knocked out in a fight. A few days later, he was hurt in another fight. A couple of months later, he had a seizure. GM Lou Lamoriello told the media that it 'was primarily due to dehydration and lack of nutrition.'

A neurologist told Lamoriello and team doctors that Peluso was at risk for permanent neurological damage if he suffered more brain trauma. This medical report was never passed along to Peluso himself. Peluso went on to fight another 120 times before retiring.

We obviously look at things differently now than we did in 1994, but some things can't be explained away by their era. Wrong is wrong. Lamoriello should rot.
