Swamp Out of the Park Baseball 2017 - Offseason

Post by Johnny Carwash »

So here's the new game idea I alluded to when winding down the RimWorld thread:

Image

I know a few here are familiar with Out of the Park Baseball, but for those who aren't: it's a game that allows you to simulate an entire baseball universe, managing teams on the field or from the front office, and playing out season after season. It doesn't have pirate raids, vomit sculptures, or eating your own pets (that I know of), but still includes lots of neat story-generation features, such as:

-Starting fights with fans
-Drug suspensions (performance-enhancing and otherwise)
-Getting injured in road-rage incidents
-Quirky superstitions like not changing your socks for extended periods of time

What I'm planning to do here is generate an entirely fictional universe, and then create a franchise made up of Swampers and simulate a season. Like with RimWorld, I'll use the polling feature here to crowdsource things like the team name, city, uniforms, etc., and then once we get into the season we can vote on roster moves.

My plan is to play things out to coincide with the 2017 MLB season, with around an update a week that includes game recaps, stats, etc. If I can get it to work, there's also a way to post league standings, statistics, and other information online for everyone's viewing, like looking at an ESPN site.

===== HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED =====

As mentioned above, I'll be putting together a team of players based on Swampers. If you want priority for inclusion, post here or send me a PM with info for how you'd like to appear in-game, including:

-Preferred position (list at least two)
-Preferred uniform number
-How you bat/throw (Right/Left/Switch)
-Your hometown

Note: for the sake of privacy, I won't use anyone's real-life names for anything posted here.

As on right now I'm also taking suggestions for the team city and/or name, which I'll gather here and then put up to polls.

Hoping to gather all the initial input over the next week or so, then posting the team preview here (including your own baseball cards!) before kicking off the season.

I'd like to be the fourth starter in the rotation (more junkballer than flamethrower, should that sort of thing matter) or a utility man, please.

I would love to be on your team, Carwash. I would run thru a wall for you.

Slot me in wherever. If there's no room for me in centerfield, maybe I can fill the Max Patkin role. This team needs a clown prince.

As for our team home, I've always been partial to mid-sized college towns. If we can sucker one of them into giving us a $600M stadium, then I think we should go there. Next to beer, we would be the most popular thing in Burlington, Vermont!

Also receiving votes: Boise, ID; Madison, WI; Lawrence, KS; Missoula, MT.

Good point. And if we play in Jacksonville or Gainesville, we can just hold Tim Tebow Night whenever attendance starts to decline. Hell, Tebow could even play with us!

Thanks everyone who's signed up so far.

Just to note, could use some more Swamp lefties and switch-hitters to balance out the lineup and pitching staff (whether you are in real life, or just want to roleplay as one in the game).

FYI, here's an idea of what the baseball cards will look like, which I'll post when the roster is all set:

Image

Still taking suggestions for the team home city and name, which I'll compile and put up to a poll.

If we are swamp, I think we need to represent a swamp. So hometown options would be Everglades, FL, Atchafalaya Basin, Louisiana, The Great Dismal Swamp, Virginia (or NC), Okefenokee (GA or FL). I guess you could go with Gainsville or Washington DC (if you want to Drain the Swamp).

As for mascot..maybe Francis Marion inspired Swamp Foxes.

Relief pitcher/starting pitcher (knuckleballer, if that even makes sense)

Revere, MA

The team name could be generated from that minor league name generator that was on here before.

Or we can just use it's algorithm and come up with our own.

Mid sized college town is awesome for the city. Then adjective. Then noun. The latter two make no fucking sense together.

Surprised it took us this long before someone requested uniform #69. Also that no one has responded to Preferred Position with "reverse cowgirl," etc.

TT is totally the hot-headed pitcher who gets ejected every third start for throwing at a guy.

Still room left on the main roster, especially utility infielders/outfielders and a couple more pitchers. I'm going to do a full minor league system, so there will be ultimately room somewhere for as many who want to participate.

Feel free to make me throw lefty, if you desire, especially to accentuate the "more junkballer than flamethrower" part of your fourth starter. Keep me batting righty, though, to make my pitching arm much more susceptible to injury from inside pitches.

I also suggest that we be the Oxnard Sugar Beets. Opposing fans can heckle us by calling us "nards" or simply by mocking our terrible nickname that is a historical reference to the city.

I want to put at least one Florida option in the poll, but having a hard time settling on one. I saw Gainesville, but I could just see our guys getting constantly one-upped everywhere by shitty UF bros. Thinking more along the lines of one of the second- or third-tier resort cities. Any suggestions?
