Went with all yellow, but gun to my head, I'm choosing green rather than brown.

If eating in hand, I prefer yellow with a little bit of brown.

If I'm cooking with bananas, all brown is the way to go.

I agree with Sabo. My wife and daughter won't touch them once a little spot appears, so at that point they become all mine.

For banana bread, the riper the better.

Yellow with a little brown, but as Sabo pointed out: you should be cooking with a brown banana.

There's about a ten-minute window in a banana's ripening process where it is the perfect food.

Before that, it's like eating bark. After that, it's just disgusting.

Can deal with a little bit of green. All yellow is best, obvs. Once any brown appears, something in my head makes me think "this banana is rotten and shitty now".

It's probably the color, the smell, the texture, and the taste

That's what I hear from my wife and daughter. I understand how the darker color and softer texture might put you off, if you are kind of delicate and sensitive. But, if it's just a couple dark spots, the taste is sweeter and better. Give it a chance.

Sure could have put this in the learn something new thread..but whatever

Not the same type of tree. The very same tree. The Cavendish, which has no seeds, is propagated by grafting or cloning. Which means that they're all identical. If you're a mass marketer, pushing everyone to expect and like the very same thing, a thing with no variation and little surprise, this is good news indeed.

and the bananas your grandparents (or parents) ate as kids were a totally different type of banana, the Cavendish is super susceptible to being whipped out by blight as the Gros Michel was in the 50s.

Also, the artificial banana flavor that is in things tastes different because it's based on the flavor of the Gros Michel.
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

I never wondered that until I read this comment.

But come to think of it, they are completely different.

On a similar note - the same is true of strawberries. The real thing tastes very little like the strawberry flavouring that is found in so many products.

Will you separate a bunch of bananas at the supermarket to get the exact number you want?

I do. Did it last evening in fact. Usually when I want 4 or 5 and the bunches are all 8 or something. If I just want a couple and know they'll be eaten soon I have no problem grabbing from the pile of touched-over solo bananas.
