Trivia Night Q's

Post by Gunpowder »

I am running a trivia night at a local bar Friday evening (for $150!!!) and want the winning team to get about 15 of these. Obviously can't make them too difficult.

How many do you guys get correct? I think they might be too easy, though yinz are a level or two above the crowd at a place like this.

1. How many square feet are in a square yard?
2. Who became the first Vice President to take over following the previous President’s death in office?
3. In the movie Office Space, what is the name of the company where the characters work?
4. Who holds the NFL single season rushing yards record, having rushed for 2,105 yards in 1984?
5. In which Canadian province is Winnipeg located?
6. Who wrote “The Grapes of Wrath”?
7. In what year did the attack on Pearl Harbor occur?
8. What college did Jackie Robinson attend?
9. Robert Plant was the lead vocalist for what band?
10. What is the capital of Wisconsin?
11. What is the common term for a myocardial infarction?
12. The world’s tallest building is located in which city?
13. James Dean was killed in 1955 while driving which make of car? (just need brand/manufacturer)
14. At the time of the 1994 baseball strike, which team had the best record in the major leagues?
15. Name the actor or actress that appears in the following three movies: Lethal Weapon, Rookie of the Year, and Black Sheep.
16. What popular grunge/rock band was originally formed in Seattle in 1990 as “Mookie Blaylock”?
17. Ronald Reagan was born in which US state?
18. In what year were women given the right to vote in the United States?
19. How many of the 30 companies currently included in the Dow Jones Index were also included in the Index 100 years ago today?
20. Who was the founder of Scientology?

14 out of 20.

Are they allowed to weight their answers depending on category? That is what a couple of the places do around these parts.

Nope. I've been to a few that do that but I like this style better. It's just a round of 20 straight-up and then a movie quotes round, which I haven't put together yet.

Just remembered the question I meant to put on there.

The "under-ride" bar or steel bar that hangs down on the back of 18-wheeler trailers is popularly named after what actress?

14, but should have known 2 others. Surprised I never knew where Jackie Robinson went to college, I guess you just don't think about which school baseball players went to.

The only Q I don't like is #19, you should just ask for the name rather than a flyer guess at the number.

I was thinking that would make it too easy. Might edit it or throw the Mansfield bar in there.

I like Q19. If you trust the questioner, you can assume it's not some random number like 7 or 13. That would be stupid. It should probably be 0, 1, (or 20, I guess) even if you know nothing about the material. So then it becomes either a good piece of trivia for someone who actually might be able to think of a good answer, or a 50-50 guess.

For #4, do you think the details at the end are too much of a giveaway? I might not have gotten it otherwise.

Maybe, but it's sort of a Jeopardy-ification of the process where I have to make sports questions simpler than they should be. Especially for a site like the sports frog.

I think that's the issue with it, you can blind guess the answer through reason. That's not good trivia, imho.

16 for me.

Are you going to break it up into categories? I've done a fair amount of Trivia nights over the years, and I always like it better when they do 5 questions in some category, rather then just jumping around randomly.

I don't have the inclination to Google all the answers but I'm fairly certain on roughly half of them. I think they'll work great. Although I would go with Knopfler over Plant.

Last time was a little too difficult for the Friday crowd (but not by much), so I made them a bit easier.

I imagine frogs will pull 18+ (though Hurricane Andrew year is a much more difficult question for non-South Floridians).
