Peddlin'

Thinking about getting back started riding mountains. Being a somewhat tall (6'3") and big (215) person, and wanting to spend between $1.5k-$2.5k, any suggestions on what direction to go for a bike? Trails here are more rooty than rocky, and I would like something that I would also be comfortable on dicking around town (evening ride down to watering hole, etc). I used to ride a fair bit when I lived back west, but am far from an expert. Never ridden on the bigger wheel bikes, but am highly intrigued (but not by the fatties).
