Vice Sports is either laying off most of its writing staff or shutting down entirely. I've read conflicting reports. Either way, Vice Media is laying off about 60 staffers today as the company puts more resources into video. This has been happening a lot in the media world lately. This one particularly hurts because Vice Sports was the only general-interest sports site that I liked.
Here's yet another example in which I feel out of step with the culture. I still appreciate good writing. I don't mind spending more than 4 minutes on an article. And I like reading articles made up of words instead of reTweets. It's getting harder and harder to find sites that publish those pieces. There's no money there.
Bryan Curtis wrote about this after Fox Sports 'pivoted to video' a few weeks ago. Looks like an update is in order. This sucks.

I don't think you're out of step with the culture. I think the ad men can't figure out how to monetize anything but video. I think the higher ups are wrong. Nobody likes video.

Way better than Sammy Hagar.

I agree with you guys about my personal preferences. BUT, I'm pretty sure nobody's ever written an article that was read over 3 billion times.
Totally Kafkaesque
