Just my opinion, but I get a little pissed at people who post comments on Facebook or Twitter claiming that people should just ignore the White Nationalist/Nazi ralliers, and say that the attention given them by the media is the real problem. (I just got in a little FB pissing match over this with some friend-of-a-friend that I don't know, on a thread started by a friend.)

Yep, it only emboldens them and makes them believe that there's a large group of people who silently support them. Their rallies need to be met by counter-demonstrations 100 times bigger and violence needs to be met with violence, ideally by law enforcement but if they're unwilling or unable then by the rest of us.

In addition to the emboldening effect, I'd imagine that a lot of black and Jewish residents of Charlottesville felt safer this past weekend knowing that there was a large group of counterprotestors willing to fight for them.

The right is armed. They also have the white house and all branches of government. What's the upside for the left if is comes to violence exactly?

I mean, literally, the right is armed. They have spent a lifetime buying and stockpiling weapons and ammunition. If violence truly breaks out, do you think the government will side against the white supremacists at this point? The neo-nazis literally are in the white house.

Most of the big cities have extremely stringent anti-gun laws on the books. If it ever came to violence, the left is literally not armed for that fight, by and large. Not even close.

They are great, but I really don't like exploiting the Mother. She was just learning that her son committed an act of terror in the name of Naziism, and they are making fun of it. I've been displeased with the new Baltimore mayor Catherine Pugh since she took office, but, fuck if she didn't mayor like a legend last night - all four confederate /white supremacist statues in the city quickly and quietly removed overnight. No muss, no fuss. City is better for that. Good on her.

One of the ones taken was a Lee and Stonewall Jackson two-fer right in the heart of the Hopkins neighborhood. Another she got was a Taney statue in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood, and she also got a Confederate women's statue. I've walked/jogged by all of those many times as they are located near work and near my house. Their presence in this city in particular was weird. And Maryland has its own complicated and shameful history with respect to slavery, the civil war, reconstruction, and white flight from the cities entombing Baltimore in particular in a de facto neighborhood apartheid, so, yeah, getting those statues the fuck out is a small bit of good on this morning.

It should be very clear now what keeping those monuments in your parks and outside your government buildings means.

Northern VA is going through a process of 'renaming". J.E.B Stuart High School is getting renamedas the portion of Route 1 currently called Jefferson Davis Highway (which includes trying to move a war memorial from 1889).

wlu - I am not remotely burdened with worrying about or being conflicted with the idea of "removing history". These are not placed in museums. They are in public places and were placed to highlight and honor white supremacy. It's not like you can drive around Germany and see Hitler statues in public places...
