This is such a great point. The states in the Deep South have some of the largest black populations, by percentage, yet their voices are so often erased from discussions about how "Southerners" feel. And with the arguable exception of Atlanta, which is sort of a haven for the black Southern middle/upper class, the black population in the South is still subject to so many vestiges of slavery and Jim Crow. The African-American incarceration and poverty rates in states like Louisiana and Mississippi are absolutely appalling.

Exactly. And you're completely right. For the most part, when people romanticize about southern culture, they're usually talking exclusively about white culture (unless it's food). And that's the tricky part about Richmond. Like any city, there are a lot of black people who live there who shouldn't have to see all these statues to Confederate heroes. The proper thing to do is probably build a nice museum - or even a dedicated park - and put them there. And DON'T put it right across the street from the courthouse or city hall.

But (I'm genuinely curious), how many of the monuments are to those guys, versus the generals and politicians and other aristocrats?

That one in Durham you saw crumble was for the soldiers of the confederacy, not any specific person. I found it very curious when one of the most outspoken liberal folks in my Facebook feed discussed his ambivalence about that one being torn down. This guy, a Durham resident, is virulently anti-Trump and anti-Republican, but he also fought in Vietnam and hated to see a monument to the common soldier torn down. I think after discussion on his post, he agreed in the end that taking it down was for the best though. Even though it honored the common soldier, it was still glorifying the message of the Confederacy. There's a similar, controversial statue on UNC's campus.

My best friend here in S.C. Is a Jewish guy who supports Trump. (We have basically agreed not to discuss politics anymore to avoid conflict.). But I want him to see this Chabon article. Any thoughts on what to do?

This is a great critique of Vance by a leftist journalist who also grew up in a poor Appalachian county that overwhelmingly supported Trump. I've pasted below her central criticism:

In many ways, I should appreciate Elegy. I grew up poor on the border of southwest Virginia and east Tennessee. My parents are the sort of god-fearing hard workers that conservatives like Vance fetishize. I attended an out-of-state Christian college thanks to scholarships, and had to raise money to even buy a plane ticket to attend grad school. My rare genetic disease didn’t get diagnosed until I was 21 because I lacked consistent access to health care. I’m one of the few members of my high school class who earned a bachelor’s degree, one of the fewer still who earned a master’s degree, and one of maybe three or four who left the area for good.

But unlike Vance, I look at my home and see a region abandoned by the government elected to serve it. My public high school didn’t have enough textbooks and half our science lab equipment didn’t work. Some of my classmates did not have enough to eat; others wore the same clothes every day. Sometimes this happened because their addict parents spent money on drugs. But the state was no help here either. Its solution to our opioid epidemic has been incarceration, not rehabilitation. Addicts with additional psychiatric conditions are particularly vulnerable. There aren’t enough beds in psychiatric hospitals to serve the region—the same reason Virginia State Sen. Creigh Deeds (D) nearly died at the hands of his mentally ill son in 2013.

And then there is welfare. In Elegy, Vance complains about hillbillies who he believes purchased cellphones with welfare funds. But data makes it clear that our current welfare system is too limited to lift depressed regions out of poverty.

Blacks and Latinos are still disproportionately more likely to live under the poverty line, but predominately white Appalachia hasn’t been spared the scourge either. And while Obamacare has significantly reduced the number of uninsured Americans, its premiums are still often expensive and are set to rise. Organizations like Remote Access Medical (RAM) have been forced to make up the difference: Back home, people start lining up at 4 a.m. for a chance to access RAM’s free healthcare clinics. From 2007 to 2011, the lifespans of eastern Kentucky women declined by 13 months even as they rose for women in the rest of the country.

The optimist (and proud Canadian) in me thinks that the collapse of rebel Media is, like the dissolution of Sun TV a few years ago, the result of this country being both too intelligent and too tolerant for media outlets like these too survive.

The realist in me figures that since there's unfettered access to more slickly produced American sites that push the same hate-filled agenda, our compatriots who tend to breath through their mouths get their affirmations from south of the border.

It's always been that way up here - American (and British) TV, music and films have traditionally been so much better than our own home-grown content so Canadians will tend to watch those. It's why the government has strict Canadian content regulations in TV and music production. A certain percentage of what is broadcast over the air has to be produced in Canada or must have a number of Canadians involved in the production. Maybe the government should insist that a certain amount of the hate speech consumed here is produced by Canadians? Then jagoffs like Ezra Levant can make a proper living...
