Hurricane Harvey
Hopefully a separate thread ends up overkill, but it's up to category 4. About 30 miles off the coast.
I felt aswirl with warm secretions.
Re: Hurricane Harvey
This would have been my signal to evacuate, and not just for the duration of the storm:

Did this thing come out of nowhere? Opposing counsel in a case I just did are from San Antonio. They're racing the storm home.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
Re: Hurricane Harvey
I just hope this thread doesn't get as long as the Hurricane Katrina thread on the old old old Swamp.

If it extends, and that Doug rugby dude shows up, be sure and shine the bat signal for me and I'll join in the fun.
Who knows? Maybe, you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away and held for ransom.

I was posting to that thread while watching CNN's coverage that revealed the "she gone..." moment. I bawled like a baby. Like however many hundreds of thousands of adults watching at that point in time. In a way it was cathartic.

As of three hours ago, Giff was OK.
I didn't check on TT, though, as he is not in my fantasy football league, which drafts tomorrow night.

Re: Hurricane Harvey
Yeah - it is indeed catastrophic. I don't think anyone can really process just how much water results from two feet of rain. And it is falling over such a large area.

tennbengal wrote:20 inches of rain in Houston overnight and more falling now.
I can't fathom such rainfall outside of the tropics, over an American urban area. And another 20" or so expected.
As for some history, TS Claudette in 1979 dumped a comparable amount of rainfall (but over a much smaller area), and the city survived: Alvin, south of Houston, still holds U.S. record for most rain in one day (43 inches)
(but Herr Starr from Preacher would have to see it)

Re: Hurricane Harvey
It's that amount of rain but over an area roughly the size of Massachusetts. So...the scale of it is just mind-boggling.
Re: Hurricane Harvey
20" inches of rain would be a snow storm in the range of 17 to 25 feet of snow.

Some computer models are speculating it could drift back out into the Gulf of Mexico, reform and hit AGAIN later in the week.

Didn't the 'storm of the century' back in '93 do the same thing (that was essentially a hurricane that ripped through in March, I believe)..

PS, Giff used "stir crazy" a little while ago. Then, they got a tornado warning.

Hey Giff -- when you get back online, give us the name of a good local charity that actually helps people in Houston to donate to, like a food bank or something. (Nothing against Red Cross because they do do good work, but kind of chafes me that they use these disasters as fundraising efforts and don't necessarily use the money for each specific disaster.)

I will give some dough. Katrina in Houston? Culling of the poor, frail and infirm. Hopefully we all know now not to count on government. Good luck folks. Help each other.

I rarely post on weekends anyway and I just want to say thanks to those who have reached out here or via text. I love you guys, no lie.
I'm all good. I stayed up with each tornado warning because we don't have a good place that's realistic for us to ride out a tornado watch. The best room in the house is a half bath so you hang out in there with a 6 and violent 2 year old for more than 30 seconds. I knew we wouldn't flood, but seeing the absolute devastation in all parts of town has taken my breath away, even with all the previous floods my hometown has suffered through.
I know the next part is a lot of alcohol talking, but watching all these people coming out with their personal boats rescuing people who are sitting on their roofs stranded while their houses are full of water is reassuring. 17-year-old kids ferrying deserted folks to staging areas. People using kayaks to rescue people. I'm very proud to call myself a Houstonian today. And so terribly sad for my city. It's still pouring and who knows what this week will bring. Hopefully something moves this storm out of here faster than they're predicting.

And I hope Ben is OK. His part of town got hammered today. At one point they got 6 inches in 1 hour.

Lastly, if you'd like to donate, I'd suggest Family Point Resources. They provide year round assistance to low income families in the form of tutoring, mentoring and coaching various little leagues. These families will feel a great deal of impact from the storm.

I was just reading that there wasn't a mandatory evacuation call by the mayor or governor or anything? How can that even happen?
Giff, I'm glad you're doing ok.
Also, search #houstonflood on Twitter. That hashtag has crazy pics and video.
