It. Somehow a glaring gap in my King reading. I also have not read THe stand. Outside of that it's the dark tower series and I have read three of those.

Daunted by the length of those two? Otherwise, not sure how you never read them. The Stand is probably my favorite King book and I've re-read it at least a half dozen times. It's not his best work, it's kind of messy and lazy in parts but I'm not sure there's a better representation of his abilities.

Re: Fall reading thread
I think it had more to do with having seen both of the miniseries already. I didn't start reading King until 1999. I'm not skeered of no length!
And I'm noting with IT that it is not as good as his later stuff on technical stuff. And like you said it's some clearly lazy stuff. But the story is great.

Re: Fall reading thread
He was on some pretty serious drugs in the 80s, so while I'm sure that helped his prolific output I'm sure it hampered his self-editing. I think of The Stand and IT as pretty similar books in many respects because they're both kind of epics (which is not something you can really say for a most of his non-Dark Tower stuff) and do a good job of world-building, which again is kind of atypical for his 20th century stuff.

And now I want to go back and re-read Christine, Pet Semetary, etc.

I'm pretty sure It is just a metaphor for him being terrified of not being taken seriously as a writer. Hell he may even be in record with that.

Yeah, that one hits a little too close to home these days. Pass on re-reading that.

Re: Fall reading thread
The Stand is my favorite of King's. I remember reading that in jr. high. My friends got tired of me reading them passages during study hall. I need to reread his stuff as it has been 20+ years.

Just finished this odd book by a highly-regarded Japanese writer.
Kept me reading, but never really drew me in.
This just arrived an hour ago. Will dive in later...

Re: Fall reading thread
I'm reading the second of the LBJ series by Robert Cato. It's mostly focused on the '48 Senate election between LBJ and Coke Stevenson, former speaker of the Texas House, Lt. Governor, and Governor.
And holy shit, was LBJ a crooked ass politician. He flat out STOLE that election. No two ways about it.

What an amazing book. Did you read the first part of the series?

Yeah, about a year ago.

Is this going to be worth reading. My gut is telling me no.

I'd agree with your gut - probably reads better as a three page screed. You can probably predict everything he'll say.

Re: Fall reading thread
Every time Olbermann opens his mouth, he hurts his own arguments. He just presents himself as an angry lunatic. I agree with his general point most of the time, and I just want to scream STFU at him whenever I try to watch. Such an arrogant prick, even more arrogant than Hannity and O'Reilly.

Yea, that Ben Affleck skit from a while back on SNL nailed his demeanor.
(And if I did want the book I wouldn't actually buy the thing. But I'll hard pass.)

Artemis just dropped on Audible. Read by Rosario Dawson. Excited to see how Weir's new thing is going to go.

Re: Fall reading thread
Good book. But some sections were very overwritten and an entire large section of the novel rang very, very false.

You are not missing anything on this one...unless you like the fact that a character played lacrosse as Washington & Lee.

Worst fucking book I’ve read in a while. Rush rates it five stars. The Martian is an all time top pick for me. THis book was garbage.

Re: Fall reading thread
It was something I got pre-release and for the price of a review. I give all of those 5 stars. If I actually rated it? Maybe a 2.

Re: Fall reading thread
I'm reading a book called A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. It is a beautifully written book about a Russian aristocrat sentenced to house arrest in a Moscow hotel in 1922.

I'm looking forward to reading that one.
Just started this one...
I feel stoned just reading it - memories of my older brother's basement bedroom are flooding back to me.

Read that last year. Was good, but IIRC concentrated on some weird bands.

I used it because BSF had mentioned artemis. These other people are anarchists.
