fuck fuck fuck.
being selfish for a minute, I have listened to his radio channel nearly every day for several years now, the channel where he is the DJ. They play rerun tapes 24/7, and he had become one of those radio friends, like the baseball announcers for your favorite team.
edit: guess TMZ called it a few minutes ago. I cut out a few words that no longer apply.
This is gonna be a tough one. R.I.P.

Yeah, he didn't hit Vegas on this last tour and I thought I should have gotten down to LA for the shows down there. But I didn't. This one really, really sucks.

Dammit! I saw him once, on the Wildflowers tour, and he was great. Had tickets a few years back, and ended up not being able to go. This sucks.

Re: Tom Petty
He was a lot better than I expected at Super Bowl 42, mostly because I figured he was a "stand and play" guy, not a "showman" (he was the year after Prince). I've done a dozen and his was one of my favorites.

We were in New Orleans for one of my best friend's bachelor party for that Super Bowl. The place we tried to go watching the game was packed by the time we got there, but we stumbled upon a dive that probably had a capacity of 40-45 people and we were the first ones there. By the time halftime arrived, there were probably 55 people in that place and we were all singing along to Free Fallin' and every other song at the top of our lungs. One of my most favorite memories.

By the way, I can't claim to know anything beyond the hits so...
1. American Girl
2. Breakdown
3. Don't Do Me Like That
4. Refugee
5. Runnin' Down a Dream
6. Into the Great Wide Open
6. Free Fallin'
7. Don't Come Around Here
8. Last Dance
9. The Waiting
10. You Wreck Me
Stop Draggin' My Heart Around would be 4th or 5th. I think the only one I actively dislike is Learning to Fly

The entire Wildflowers album is fantastic from start to finish.
If you're looking beyond the hits, I recommend Down South, Yer So Bad, and Crawling Back to You.

Not going to try to rank them, but I'd also throw in:
* I Need to Know
* Listen to Her Heart
* You Got Lucky
* Even the Losers
* Here Comes my Girl
* I Won't Back Down
* She's a Woman in Love
He also did a great cover of the Byrds' "Feel a Whole Lot Better"

Only major Petty song I actively dislike is "Free Fallin'". That's saying something because I'm a bit of a misanthrope.

Re: Tom Petty
The song (to me) that initially set Petty apart from most musicians was Here Comes my Girl on Damn the Torpedoes. There's an affect to that song that I seldom hear. Where the chord hammers home the sentiment. Kind of like Born to Run in that sense.

Re: Tom Petty
An anecdote that endeared him to me was regarding the first single Listen to her Heart off his second album, You're Gonna Get It. The first line of the song goes:
You think you're gonna take her away
With your money and your cocaine
This was the late 70's and the record label told him no way he was putting that word in the lyrics, and demanded he change "cocaine" to "champagne". Petty told them something to the effect of, "People will relate much more to the character in the song if it's cocaine than if it's champagne!" And, told the record label he refused to change the lyric to suit them. He wasn't that big a star yet, so I loved that he stood up against his label up for his song.

Re: Tom Petty
Headed back down south
Gonna see my daddy's mistress
Gonna buy back her forgiveness
Pay off every witness
One more time down south
Sell the family headstones
Drag a bag of dry bones
Make good on my back loans
So if I come to your door
Let me sleep on your floor
I'll give you all I have
And a little more
Sleep late down south
Look up my former mentors
Live off Yankee winters
Be a landlord and a renter
Create myself down south
Impress all the women
Pretend I'm Samuel Clemens
Wear seersucker and white linens
So if I come to your door
Let me sleep on your floor
I'll give you all I have
And a little more
Spanish moss down south
Find the heroes of my childhood
Who now can do me no good
Carve their names in dogwood
Chase a ghost down south
Spirits cross the dead fields
Mosquitoes hit the windshield
All documents remain sealed
So if I come to your door
Let me sleep on your floor
I'll give you all I have
And a little more

Having trouble finding it online, but his cameo in the last episode of The Larry Sanders Show was pure gold.

Like half a dozen people here didn't recognize Sting in Money For Nothing, so I can almost believe him.

Like in hindsight its obvious, but the sound of the song is nothing like what I expect of Petty as someone who only knows Petty's hits.

Sers, only the fucking good die young, and TP is/was way way too young.

Sadly, this is gonna sow not only confusion, but a shitpile of false hope. Prognosis for a 67yo man found by EMTs unconscious with no vital signs, that turns out to be cardiac arrest, even w/o preexisting conditions, carries a mortality that approaches 99%. Of course, some of that info I cite in that evaluation may turn out to be error. I hope it doesn't cause his family much additional upset and difficulty. (proud I didn't say heartbreak.)
I often cite that a golden age of music dawned in the middle of my college years, roughly 1976. Ramones, Dolls, Bruce, Costello, Graham Parker, Heads, et al. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, their first album, November 1976. First record was very good, not a hall of fame record, yet the last cut was American Girl.
Second album, You're Gonna Get It was closer to 12" album genius. Included the breakout radio hits I Need to Know and Listen To Her Heart, as referenced above, and many other strong cuts. While those first three albums were in my age wheelhouse (20-23), and the first time I could afford to buy records without thinking twice (as long as I kept it to about one a week,) he went on for years and years. Sure some clunkers, but his last album, Hypnotic Eye, is fucking fantastic and I highly recommend. I also love the two Mudcrutch records. Like my man Parker, both of them with somewhat less acclaim and attention then Bruce, Petty made some great music in the past decade, didn't need to ride on a geezer rock pedigree that trailed off long ago like so many bands (nothing wrong with geezer rock, lots of people love it).
Oh I could go on at much greater length, prob should throw up a blog post. But one little remembered tidbit, Donald 'Duck' Dunn plays on a small number of cuts. He is my fav all time bass player, all things considered (I won't argue the best, just my fav), and I just love this little tune so damn much, from Damn The Torpedoes. That's just my dumb opinion; You Tell Me:
(at least earphones, better take the time to turn up the bass if listening on phone or computer, the virtuosity is the reward)
(oh, Benmont's work on this cut is notably brilliant as well)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S51JzoGx348
and, on the lighter side, I still often think of this and chuckle, all these years later. Of course I am easily amused, but we all know that:

It's not a perfect comparison, but in many ways, Petty is Florida's Springsteen.
